Depends on where you are. If in Bell Rose Morgan City is Down the Bayou. If you are south of Morgan City then it is up the bayou.

I have lived in Cut Off since 2007 and I now say up da bayou and down da bayou all the time.

Bell Rose??? No where near Morgan City and neither of them are on Bayou Lafourche LA 1/ LA 308

When people say “Down the Bayou”

The bayou is Bayou Lafourche they are referring to.

People in lafourche parish maybe

Those in Terrebonne say up/down the bayou as well and are never referring to bayou lafourche

08, you’re right about bell rose I don’t know WTF I was thinking. I used to run Hwy 70 a good bit from Bayou Pigeon all the way down 70 into Morgan city. I guess I was thinking about Belle River.

There are a bunch of people using the UTB. DTB all over the place now especially in Terrebonne and while partly in lafourche parish the des allemands crowd uses it in reference to Bayou Des Allemands or Bayou Gauche.

Maybe if you live in Lafourche. I grew up in south Terrebonne. The bayou was Little Calliou. It’s all we knew just like all you prob knew was Bayou Lafourche

Being from DTB in Larose and living in south Cut Off I agree with the four directions but add two more.

The front and the back.

The front is near the bayou and the back is toward the 40 arpent (acre) canal back in the day or these days the hurricane levee.

This is why the 4 lane highway LA 3235 from Larose to Golden Meadow is called the “back road”

Down da bayou typically refers to Bayou Lafouche. Folks that live Down da Bayou are closer to the gulf. Folks that live Up da Bayou are closer to Donaldsonville.

However, down da bayou tends to be slang referring to anyone who lives in a remote rural part of south Louisiana along the water.

See, Cajuns are typically divided into two main groups: Bayou Cajuns (Bayou Lafouche) and Prairie Cajuns (around Lafayette area). Very different lifestyles despite being similar cultures.

Then, you’ve got your weird AP/lower LP cajuns that are all interbred with Germans, Islanos, Creoles, Irish, and who knows what else.

Morgan City is on the Atchafalaya River, so it’d be down river, not down da bayou.
