All I know is I asked a co-worker if she was going to her parents house "down the bayou" for the weekend, and she got pissed.

Apparently some people take it/ mean it to be derogatory.

Morgan City is on the Atchafalaya River, so it’d be down river, not down da bayou.

Hydraulically, it's a distributary, which would make it a bayou. Except for the fact it's so big. And that someone named it a river. So yeah, river.

Then, you’ve got your weird AP/lower LP cajuns that are all interbred with Germans, Islanos, Creoles, Irish, and who knows what else.

That group are River Cajuns.

See, Cajuns are typically divided into two main groups: Bayou Cajuns (Bayou Lafouche) and Prairie Cajuns (around Lafayette area). Very different lifestyles despite being similar cultures

It will probably be referred to as the Piggly wiggly regardless of what it's operating name is.

As someone raised in a city on I-10, I always referred to “down da bayou” as anywhere significantly south of I-10 (not as close as New Iberia, but places like Morgan City, Lockport, Houma, Thibodeaux, Golden Meadow, etc.).

I didn’t know the Piggly Wiggly was the mason dixon line of up/down the bayou.

Bayou lafourche runs north/south. Up the bayou or down the bayou is ever changing depending on where you are. If you are in golden meadow, then galliano is up the bayou. If you are in larose, then galliano is down the bayou….. that being said, everything below the Intracoadtal canal is referred to as “DTB”… down the bayou, because in reference to the full Bayou lafourche, it’s on the southern end, hopefully that’s confusing enough.

This is 100% accurate

However some may use Hwy 90 if you’re including Thibodaux

So the guys I know from that area consider the location of where you are or live to be determined by highway 90. South of highway 90, you are down da bayou. But several of those guys are from the greater Chackbay area so the Thibodaux rule is in effect there

Those people saying it in reference to bayou terrebonne are wrong… and the only people who use HWY 90 as the DTB line are Yankees. Everyone south of the Intracoastal on lafourche will tell you that the intracoastal is the line… since they are technically “down the bayou” from the others saying HWY 90 is the line, they have the final say on where DTB begins…. This was the verdict ruled in the Thibodaux courthouse in 1937

Not sure how anything ruled in Thibodaux would affect Terrebonne

And if I’m standing at the post office in Chauvin - I’m going to meet you ‘down the bayou’ at the piggly wiggly

If I’m at lake Boudreaux, I’m going ‘up the bayou’ to the piggly wiggly - what the heck does that have to do with bayou lafourche?

And I’m going to town to Walmart to buy t’boo new pappans but I got to take them across the bayou bc he’s staying with his nanny this weekend

Obviously it was a play on the fact that people from the south are prideful of where they are from. So the people from bayou lafourche would likely argue that they are the real “down the bayou” and not terrebonne.

It was somewhat of a joke…. That you missed. But if it makes you feel better, yes…. Bayou terrebonne is also a bayou that runs north and south, good job

And….. there was obviously no court ruling of where “DTB” starts, you missed that one also. I’m assuming you are from terrebonne in which your misunderstanding all makes sense.
