I don’t understand why people are shitting their pants over the Delta variant. Sure cases are surging and people are even being hospitalized from it. But few are dying. The national 7 day case rate is a little over 54,000. But the national death rate sits at only 276 people. And in New York, which was the epicenter of the pandemic, the seven day death average sits at a whopping SIX.

LINK

Help me understand why people are talking about remasking and even returning to lockdowns. What science is there to justify such actions?

ETA: if you’re going to downvote the thread at least explain why you disagree with the premise and support the return of COVID restrictions.

Viruses want to live. They want to survive. It doesn’t benefit a virus to kill its host. It just wants to spread.

As viruses mutate they become MORE contagious and LESS deadly.

That’s why it’s so stupid they keep moving to goalposts to now measuring this by case numbers.

It’s like chicken pox. Get it. Get natural antibodies. And get it out of the way and go live your life.

Viruses are Not alive. Remember when we use to have a new strain of flu each year? And it caused some elderly folks to get pneumonia and some of them died ?

I'm in the "live your life as you want" crowd.

But you "get" chicken pox as a healthy child, usually. Not as an adult with comorbodities. This advice is not good for many people.

But now even those with comorbidities are not dying from this variant in high numbers. In the last year, in addition to the vaccine, our healthcare providers have developed treatments that have drastically reduced the death rate from the virus. Look at the numbers. They don’t lie. Large numbers of people are getting the variant. But, unlike in the past, very few are dying.

Big picture, hear you! My picture as I type:

Son has it Day 8

Unvaccinated wife missing him (partitioned off from him) and worried about him

Sister has it Day 12 (2 hospital visits for dehydration and "brutal" nausea as she has stated)

Aunt has it Day ?? (ICU, no vent but that is last effort)

Mother and FIL have every high risk health issue that would be life threatening if they got it.

I had to cancel medical procedure and important business trip last week

Life would be better without it! IMO, Vax or no Vax, individuals doing the right things to stop the spread while living their best lives should be focus for the time being

Have you seen anyone with chicken pox lately? No, because we have a vaccine for that.

my 43 year old cousin died last Friday and her 49 year old husband died a week before from the delta variant. Neither had preexisting conditions as far as I know and neither were vaccinated. This is the first instance of it hitting close to home and it scared the hell out of me.

Very sorry for what you’re going through. But here is the bottom line, we will never totally stop this virus. It’s present in virtually every country on the planet. It will never be totally eradicated. We have to go on with our lives and learn to live with it as we do the flu.

I’m very sorry for your loss. And I know it’s hit close to home for you. But we can’t base public health decisions on anecdotal evidence. We have to follow the science. And the science shows that while this variant is very contagious, it’s not close to the earlier variants from a morbidity standpoint. This is due to the vaccine, which I’ve taken BTW, and improved treatments. Yes, people will still die from it and that is tragic. But as I said, we can’t go back to COVID restrictions because of Delta. The science does not support it.

The Science does however. And we always follow The Science, not the science.

Do you work in a hospital? If not then you have no clue how often we get exposed to it. It’s bad right now. It’s as bad as it was a few months in last year. With that being said I say keep everything open and people can choose whether they want to wear
masks or not.
