I used to think that if I got 500 plate appearances in MLB that I could luck into like 4 hits. I feel like that was pretty dumb.

Me 10-15 years ago would probably be able to scratch put a few hits. Current old me probably not.

Most of the best pitchers I knew in high school were really good hitters. They just weren’t in the same level as D1 type hitters. Many MLB pitchers are phenomenal athletes. 4 actual hits off MLB pitching would be tough.
I know pitchers who were not good hitters in high school who were drafted.

One who is in the Majors right now had 4 hits in about 60 plate appearances last season, which seems to be pretty standard for pitchers in MLB from what I can tell by looking at a bunch of random pitcher's stats.

So if 4 hits in about 50 at bats (60 PA's) is pretty standard for pitchers who weren't great hitters even in high school, there's no reason why a decent high school player couldn't get 4 hits in 500 plate appearances.

That's my reasoning for saying he could do it.

If you can spot up a kick reasonably well and don't establish a pattern for where you target, I would have to think the goalie will just guess wrong a decent amount of times.

the problem is the goalies would realize you weren't any good after a few so they wouldn't be guessing a direction and diving, they would just stand in the middle waiting for you to kick it then save it. on the other hand that would give you a full seasons worth of time to be practicing so you could probably still have a chance depending on the team. some teams dont even get 5 PK attempts a year

Last a round with Mike Tyson by ducking, dodging and running.

That ring is a lot smaller than you figure.

A cousin that played baseball 40 years ago for American Legion. Dude was for sure he was better than current MLB pitchers at the time.

All you are really arguing here is you would make 5 penalty kicks if allowed to take everyone. That seems high but plausible. I would think a quality high school level soccer player would make one of three PKs? That might even be high.

You would score 0 goals from run of play. Not even close to scoring 1.

A casual acquaintance of mine once claimed that he could take up track and field and given a year of training run under a 4:00 mile.

He claimed that running takes no talent and that "it's all in how you move your legs."

Dude was a mediocre HS baseball player.

I mean, I shot over 90% from the line in middle school. It's not unreasonable. Hard, but not unreasonable.

he was the primary shot taker on the team. He’s a decent athlete but not a good basketball player or shooter, and around 5’10. He said throwing up enough shots, enough would go in. We argued that he would be guarded by the other teams best defender who would be taller, stronger, faster by a lot and wouldn’t be giving him space to throw up enough open shots for 15% or so to go in and get to double digits.

He would not be guarded at all, and the other team would let him get 12 points on 6 for 35 shooting and his team would lose by 100. but he's right, he could get double digits as the primary shooter.

Had a buddy that swore up and down to own a 1989 Mike Greenwell starting lineup figure in a fielding position. What an a-hole. Everyone knows he only came in a batting position.

You should buy your friend another as an apology

No, the hypothetical was that he would also be guarded as if he was an nba caliber player, same as everyone else.

Otherwise yeah obviously if you get enough open shots you can knock a few down.

I had a whole thread about this a few years ago.

I have this friend who swears he can make a AAA baseball team like the Zephyrs, i mean Baby Cakes. This guy did not even play baseball in highschool. He's just going off the fact that he can hit a cabbage ball far. FWIW we played cabbage ball in middle school! 5'8 155. I said hes crazy, and that there is no way he can just step in and hit 85 mph pitching at that level. He wants to try out for a baseball team. What does OT say.?

That’s probably not stupid. A WNBA challenge would be the easiest for a natural male to win

In that case he would be lucky to get a bucket if the nba player was playing hard. Think about Scottie Pippin and MJ shutting down Tony Kukoc in the 92 olympics. The talent difference between your friend and an average NBA player would be far greater than that.

Knew an idiot that was adamant he could average at least 3.5 yards a carry behind an NFL O-Line. Keep in mind he was 5'11 210 and probably ran a 5.1 40

Had one of these guys in our group though he said 3.0 yards a carry.

Idiot.
