Hearing at least 2 deaths. But not sure if it’s true. Came from someone at the channelview site

acid release

Based on products produced there, that makes sense.

H2S I think unlikely.
The refinery is a separate facility in Pasadena.

Two people are dead and four people sustained injuries following a chemical leak at the LyondellBasell Industries in La Porte, the city’s Office of Emergency Management confirmed Tuesday.

Crews responded to reports of an incident at LyondellBasell Industries, which is located at 1515 Miller Cut-Off Road, around 7:35 p.m. Officials said the facility experienced an acetic acid leak, which is a simple monocarboxylic acid containing two carbons. It has a role as an aprotic solvent, a food acidity regulator, an antimicrobial food preservative, and a Daphnia Magna metabolite.

Curious if they were operators or contractors. Scary stuff.

For those of you who read H2S 17 times before deciding to google what it meant.

2 dead. The plant makes ethylene, propylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, acetic acid and vinyl acetate monomer.

Wasn't there a shelter in place in Laporte just last week due to a leak at one of the plants there?

Acetic acid…that is not what I was expecting to read. This is terrible news. People often forget how dangerous it is working in plants

Most deaths from H2S is because is where highly concentrated it has no smell. Mercaptans have the smell.

And there shouldn't be any H2S in that plant at all.

H2S isn’t even required PPE at that plant so that makes sense

This is wild. Must have been a huge spill

I’m an operator and we use acetic as a feed. Unload trucks of it weekly to keep the tank full.

I’ve been “hit” by fumes a few times. Strong vinegar smell, enough to make you jerk your head and gtfo but I never considered it to be deadly

We use acetic acid at my plant, to blend in for another product. Working in the lab I have to test it’s strength. It’s is a miserble odor for sure, but like the mercapan they put in other things so you can smell it, I never thought it would kill you.

I can see how if you were engulfed in it you could be overcome. It’s have to be a pretty big release I’d think.

That’s because vinegar is acetic acid, but your bottle of vinegar from Walmart is ~5% acetic acid with balance being water. 95+% acetic acid used in industrial feedstocks so infinitely more potent (and dangerous)

High strength acetic acid, has a smell to it, that I can see if released, could easily have a bad outcome. The 250ml sample jars I deal with will make my entire lab stink for hours with our hoods running full force.

Had to have been a spill/release. Prayers go out to those involved. Like myself.. Never knew it could do this, but looking back can see how it would with a spill.

Glacial Acetic Acid - Think way stronger than the strongest Vinegar you will ever encounter. Smell is overpowering. Chemical burns are deep and very painful. Stuff is not the worst acid you will encounter, but very very nasty. Causes lung damage if airborne exposure is lengthy or strong.

Nothing I read said the dump was large, but I bet it was.

Feel for these folks. Prayers said.
