It’s have to be a pretty big release I’d think.

Officials said nearly 100,000 pounds of glacial acetic acid were released during the leak.

That’s because vinegar is acetic acid, but your bottle of vinegar from Walmart is ~5% acetic acid with balance being water. 95+% acetic acid used in industrial feedstocks so infinitely more potent (and dangerous)

Yep I just looked it up. Flammable and immediately dangerous to life and health above 50 ppm (in vapor). Above 250 ppm and you’re going to die

Stuff is not the worst acid you will encounter, but very very nasty. Causes lung damage if airborne exposure is lengthy or strong.

How does it compare to muriatic acid? I use that stuff to clean my fish hauling tanks and algae off oxygen probe buoys and it’s pretty stout the fumes out of a gallon jug burn like hell

Hydofluoric and cyanuric are more deadly in lower concentrations. Strong sulfuric will burn you like the nazi at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Muriatic (dilute hydrochloric) will burn you but it’s not like the others.

I’m guessing the fatalities were due to lung damage from a vapor cloud exposure. Concentrations above 250 ppm (airborne) will likely kill anyone that’s exposed for less than an hour. It’s also possible it ignited
