Question about radio hosts

Do they have to time when they stop talking with the beginning of a song or does the station have some kind of tech or editing technique they use to start a song right after the host stops talking?

I might have just a little experience with your subject (see username -- 47 yrs in radio), but can you flesh out your question some more so I can help?

I feel like the hosts talking in between songs always time finishing what they have to say right when the lyrics for the next song starts, and I’m wondering if this is a timing skill they have to have by knowing each song they play or if the studio does some editing to just make the timing appear precise.

Great question. And yes to both of your suggestions.
1) Back in the day (cue old-guy alert), 45-spinning live-radio DJs had to have exactly the skill you suggest, which is knowing -- and more-importantly feeling -- when the lyric starts. It's called the "hitting the post" and it's quite an art.
2) Nowadays (more old-guy alerting), there is such a thing as a "segue editor", located inside the stations playback-automation system. Other than live-talk morning shows, most every music DJ you hear is pre-recorded, utilizing said segue editor to time-slide music intros, outros and vocal segments in order to sound seamless.
From a quick search, here's one example: LINK
And yes, to all of the radio people whom I know infest this site, this is the dreaded "Voice Track". Better to let the folks know what they are listening to, says me.

I remember when a Chattanooga station picked up a syndicated show called John Boy and Billy. They had the local DJ trying to sound like he was in the booth with the syndicated show.
It was obvious, awkward, and just bad. Speaking of, I really hate "morning zoo" shite like John Boy and Billy.

It grinds my gears when DJs talk over the song intro

I’ve wondered about that with XM shows. It has to be tempting to record the talk segments in a short time, then have a tech insert the music. You could knock out several shows in one recording session. But I hear some, like on Bluegrass Junction, where they take calls and requests so are presumably live.

They’re all terrible in general. Especially the ones with a straight woman sidekick whose job it is to keep the zookeepers in line. And they’re constantly howling with laughter even though no one ever says anything remotely humorous. There’s a local FM morning show in my area that’s been on the air for an astounding 34 years and it’s garbage.

Nothing personal, Dr. Technical, but the music fans HATE that. Ruins the musical intros, especially back in the day when I would wait for a song I liked to come on so I could tape it.

Yeah, there was a special skill developed by sitting with your finger over the record button of your hand held tape recorder waiting to press it as soon as you heard the opening notes of a favorite song.
We also used to record the audio of episodes of Welcome Back Kotter off the tv, play them back, and just laugh and laugh.
Good times. :D

I remember making a drunken late night request for Lunatic Fringe and adding “and don’t f***ing talk while the song is on!”
One local station used the slogan “We don’t talk while the music plays.”

always hate when they cut a song short and start yapping!

Before they ever play a song on the air, they play it to find out the actual time of the song ( not always the same as the time listed), the length of the intro, and how the song ends.
So you know the song is 3:52 long, has a :32 second intro, and has a cold ending.
All this info is noted on the record (I'm old, too), CD, or the log, so you can use it accordingly
