True Romance

Well that was something. Watched it for the first time last night. It was the last unwatched work from Tarantino for me. I could definitely see his fingerprints all over it and see how kind of raw it was compared to his stuff today. I enjoyed it but I can see how it would have flopped in the early 90s before he learned to trim the edges on his writing.
It was pretty fun as well to see people who would go on to be regulars in QTs movies pop up with much more frequency than I expected.

To be honest, if QT does another novel, I hope he does True Romance. I want him to elaborate more on the Clarence character. I want to hear more of Clarence’s take on pop culture.

The original QT screenplay was different from the completed film. It was more like Pulp Fiction with non linear overlapping scenes and more campy dialogue.
The Director cut it up and put it in a normal order and made it a more traditional love story. I think someone has done the same with Pulp Fiction - chopped it up and re-edited the movie in chronological order. Something gets lost in the translation. Would have been interesting to see True Romance as Quentin originally envisioned it. But then again, we may never have gotten Pulp Fiction if that happened.

I personally think Tony Scott did a much better job than QT could have done at the time. Scott was certainly able to get a cast that is almost unbelievable. So many small parts become so much bigger due to the actors and performances.
TR remains one of my favorite movies.

I don’t know this to be true, but I have to believe Gandolfini’s role in this led to David Chase casting him in Sopranos.

Loved it. Samuel Jackson lasted about 2 minutes in it as Big Don. My favorite quote was "I eat everything, I eat the pussy, I eat the butt!" lol
Also Val Kilmer was Elvis. Apparently he had a thing in real life with Elvis impersonations and he played this tiny role in TR where Clarence would see him when he went to the bathroom.
And Tony Soprano (Gandolfini) had a small part as a mob enforcer who kicks Alabama's arse in TR.
And I'm a huge Gary Oldman fan and he absolutely nailed the part of Drexel in this.
The awesome actors with small parts in this movie was a great thing. Christopher Walken as Blue Lou's right hand was awesome too.

That scene almost gave the movie an X-rating.
The MPAA said she was too primal.
That fight scene was brutal, I can't imagine what they cut out.
