He’s your starting catcher. Defense is the most important attribute for a catcher and Milazzo is phenomenal. But I 100% expect JJ to improve his hitting enough to at least be decent. That’ll be all we need.

If Milazzo can just hit .250 I’ll take that. With everyone else around him it will be enough. Also everyone else around him murdering the ball might raise his average anyway.

Johnson didn’t add Priester and McManus for no reason. He’s telling Milazzo he’s going to have competition no matter how good his defense is and he’ll have to fight for it.

I agree if he does improve his hitting he will start though. It has to be a pretty dramatic improvement for that to happen

Milazzo is teetering on transfer watch after this commit.

I don’t think Milazzo is a Jay Johnson type of player. Johnson likes big bodies and dudes that rake. I see him transferring or riding the pine.

Lol yeah right. Again, Milazzo isn’t just a good defensive catcher. He’s elite. JJ improves his bat and he starts. Bank on it!

Wrong. Here’s the quote from Jay Johnson just a week or so ago about Milazzo.

“Jay Johnson on catcher: "It's one of the most important positions the field."
Says Alex Milazzo is one of the best catch-and-throw guys in the country and they're excited to work with him offensively.”

You don’t understand. The defense we get from Milazzo saving 15 runs a game by not letting the ball roll to the back of the fence or throwing it into the stands after every pitch is invaluable.

There is no reason to even think about replacement if he’s batting .150. I mean, it not .100?

Coach speak, man.

Johnson likely doesn’t want to openly force people out. But you start adding guys at certain positions & you get those borderline guys to think twice & make the decision for themselves.

I hope he stays ! with wanaka and johnson milazzo will have not good but great hitting coaches. Fitzgerald has a great eye too.

He will play late in games at worst as a defensive replacement. if games go into extras he may have to hit in high pressure moments

He brought in McManus who was a backup at Samford. And not good defensively. Taken strictly for his bat. Probably a DH candidate. Preister is a freshman. He’s not out performing Milazzo.

From the expectations I've seen on here with the new coach and all, a guy who steps in the bucket every pitch like a little leaguer has no business being on the roster next season.

Players who still step in the bucket in college don't become decent hitters

Milazzo has hit .148 over the last two seasons. He’s officially one of the guys on the tryout bubble. He better learn to swing it, and fast.

JJ told milazzo that if he's not hitting .300 then it's on him, not millazo. That's how confident he is. Told him he's the best defensive catcher in the country and he better not even think about entering the portal.
