ETA:
And I honestly mean that, how the frick do you find a sense of fulfillment blowing hours a day on here regurgitating what everyone already tries to ignore; at all costs? Jesus dude, you are the reason.
Enough internet for me today

How? Things were rocking along until pretty recently. Didn’t really get ugly till the portal.
Yes the weed stuff is stupid but that could be fixed on its own.

They'll just sound like head coaches supporting their sponsers.

How?

As much as it sucks at times, there's no reason why athletes shouldn't have the same rights as regular college students.
They already had more rights than regular college students.

not too surprising...but definitely disappointing

I mostly agree. I don't mind expanding the playoff.

Transfer portal, waivers, and NIL are all terrible things. Should have never even cracked open those doors.
But we had to, don't you see? We couldn't allow the continued abuse of those scholarship athletes who freely chose their situation.
Free college, food, training, housing, and all the fun that comes along with it? That's torture.

100% agree that the students didn't start this and the blame is on everyone who supported what you're talking about. BUT, two "wrongs" don't make a right.
And yes, in the context of amateur college sports, these latest developments are wrong in that they are antithetical.

This is just beating the bloated corpse of college football at this point. Everything burns with liberals. Nothing is sacred anymore.

quote:point being, it's the schools who created this monster. Major college football is not an amateur sport. There is too much money involved now and its the schools who have pushed for that. We are now simply dealing with a logical circumstance resulting from that. If we want to return the sport to what it was in the 60s, it starts with the schools. Not the players

Can they get a job during the season?
How bout FB players leaving after one year to pursue their chosen profession?
What "more rights" do they have over regular students?

At least LSU will have a title to vacate and we have 3 others to keep us warm, 2 this century. When did Texas A&M last win a national title in football?
Texas A&M would have had a dynasty in the 40s and 50s if it wasn’t for that draft dodger FDR getting us into WW2

So the head of Big 12 officiating doesn't even say/know if it's legal?
Same thing with the Horns Down/taunting issue where he said it would "probably" be a penalty if players did it to the opposing team.
JFC. At least fricking make a ruling so teams and players know what's allowed and what's not.

As I’ve said before, the beauty of college sports is that it’s NOT pro sports. There was always a connection to the students playing. The connection has loosened over the years. When I was at LSU over a decade ago, I saw many of these athletes in my “gen ed” classes. You realized that they were stuck doing the same projects and essays you were.
I always thought it sucked that I could find an outside activity related to my major that allowed me to make money, but an athlete couldn’t. Of course they should be able to work a camp or sign autographs for cash. The NIL was done irresponsibly.
It’s only a matter of time before some POS athlete from some school gets busted for domestic violence, rape, serious drugs, theft, etc, who is being paid 5 figures to stand in a commercial for 20 seconds.
These kids are no longer your classmates. The studs are paid professionals. I didn’t get that vibe when I saw these guys eating at the dining hall, or running into the star QB at a sandwich shop.
I don’t pay to attend NFL games. It has nothing to do with the product, and everything to do with the fact that I prefer college. I enjoy tailgating with friends, and walking down the hill into a packed TS hoping the men wearing purple and gold emerge victorious. It used to be that those men were classmates. Now, they are far from it. It’s not their fault. It’s the fault of the entire system.

This is a lie, schools have been changing conferences for the entire history of the game. They just started doing it for media reasons within the last 20 years because of ESPN's insistence on controlling the sport. Guess what else has been ruining the sport? Playoffs, transfer portal and NIL. Who put the wheels in motion on each of those and supported them fully? ESPN.
And spare me the bullshite about the coaches being paid. They are more available than the athletes. Most guys don't make it their full 4 years and a small percentage even contribute positively in that time.
Fans want money spent on their stadium and gameday experience because they are the customers. Have you ever actually worked a day in your life?
