Some quotes from baseball media session today

Johnson, Dugas, Fontenot and Hilliard were there
quote:
Jay Johnson on the return of Dugas/Hilliard/Fontenot: "It's huge. Look at the CWS teams this year – one theme is they were all old and experienced...I can't overstate how important that is."
quote:
Jay Johnson says Gavin Dugas can be 'as impactful as any hitter in the country' next season.
He also loves that Devin Fontenot and Ma'Khail Hilliard pitched in high leverage situations last season.
quote:
Jay Johnson on adding transfers to the team: "Everyone wants to come to LSU. Getting the right player is the most important thing."
He says he's been very intentional about the types of players they evaluate and add to the roster.
quote:
Jay Johnson on catcher: "It's one of the most important positions the field."
Says Alex Milazzo is one of the best catch-and-throw guys in the country and they're excited to work with him offensively.
Adds Hayden Travinski "has a lot of talent" – just needs to get healthy.
quote:
Jay Johnson says his top strength is helping players with their mindset.
"We're going to work on mindset every single day in our program."
quote:
Devin Fontenot: "I decided to come back because of things me and Coach J discussed. I want to help lead this team to Omaha. I think we'll have a good chance at that this year."
Said he wanted to go in the top 5 rounds of the draft, but knows he has work to do at LSU to get there
quote:
Devin Fontenot says he expects Jason Kelly's pitching program will be a little more individualized and focus on each player more specifically. That was a part of the appeal to come back for another year.
quote:
Gavin Dugas on coming back: "To be honest, it's absurd the amount of talent we're going to have on this team. We're going to have a great opportunity to do a lot of great things, and I really wanted to be a part of it. It was ultimately the best decision for me."
quote:
Gavin Dugas: "Coach J brings an absurd amount of confidence with him in the way he carries himself. I think that's going to carry over to the team and each individual player. I think we're going to be pretty damn good. I can't wait to get on campus and get to work."
quote:
Gavin Dugas says he told Jay Johnson the other day he feels like he committed to LSU as a freshman all over again – that's how excited he is for next season.
quote:
Ma'Khail Hilliard on losing his father: "That first week after it happened, you're still in shock. It doesn't hit you...I keep remembering how great of a man he was. I feel blessed I was able to spend 22 years with him."
Says his dad wanted him to stay at LSU and graduate.
quote:
Ma'Khail Hilliard: "From the first time I talked to both (Coach Johnson and Coach Kelly), the message was, 'We're going to develop you and do everything possible to make you the best player you can be.'"

I was somewhat lukewarm on the Johnson hire at first. Liked it, but didn't necessarily love it. Not anymore.

This coach must be the most charismatic person on the planet

Same feeling. Felt meh at the time … Now? Can’t wait for baseball season.
It’s a breath of fresh air, really.

As a father to two boys, this made me tear up.

He wins the interview every time. If he has the same effect on the play on the field, LSU will be dangerous for a long time to come.

Wtf was Dunn doing the last few years?

I am similar. I liked it for sure, but wanted McDonnell. This guy has really made me a believer before he even has his first roster settled. The excitement is palpable and I think he's going to win...a lot.

That's why I wasn't stressing over exactly who the hire was. I knew whoever it was would be here because they were excited for the opportunity to coach at LSU. Anybody would have been a breath a fresh air over Mainieri. From the point he was hired, everything about Johnson has seemed incredible though. Can't wait to see how it translates on to the diamond.

Yeah that quote stuck out to me the most.

Not trying to shite on PM, but anybody have any guesses on how many of these guys would have came back if there wasnt a new regime.

The key with the new coach is that I want him to have a strong desire to chase down Skip. I understand it's not realistic, and likely will never be accomplished again. I want that type of fire though. Not someone who will become a fixture in Omaha early, win a title, and then become complacent.
I want to reach the top and then for teams to have one hell of a difficult time trying to remove us from there.
Everything about Johnson so far seems like he may be that guy.

We are definitely ignorant. Well said.

Not a good look for Dunn.

quote:The staff of pitchers that couldnt throw a strike when needed, couldnt develop an out pitch and were ineffective was a pretty bad look for a while.
Not a good look for Dunn.

You mean his entire tenure?
He never individualized. It was always a blanket program.

That’s what happens when majority of the fan base doesn’t know the names of more than 5 coaches in the entire sport.
Outside of the names everyone knew people wouldn’t throw out names they would say “the coach at X school would be a good hire. Look what he does there”

WTH? He NEVER worked with pitchers individually? How in the world did he expect them to progress? Until now, I never even thought this was a possibility. I thought maybe he just sucked at coaching some of them up. Now I know he never actually gave them a real opportunity to be coached up.
