Has anyone here watched Riverdale (CW)?

Me and my sisters were big Archie fans growing up so I decided to give this a watch on Netflix. I read reviews before watching and they were bad, but they all seemed to be written by angry teenage girls who were upset that their own fantasy writing for the show didn't come to fruition. It's Archie, how badly could they screw it up?
It's bad.
I somehow made it through 4 seasons.
Season 1 isn't bad, in a way that The Force Awakens wasn't bad, that it sets the tone for potential going forward.
However Season 2 onward is just bad.
The writers took something that is literally impossible to screw up, the Archie Comics universe, and screwed it up.
Each character diverts wildly from the character they were in the comics.
The main cast's best character is Jughead, but instead of the goofball he was in the comics, he is more collected and reserved, almost emo type of guy. His character is still the best though because he doesn't take himself too seriously despite his emo style, unlike...
...Archie. Takes himself way too seriously. He is a male version of a Mary Sue. Everything he does he is good at. There is nothing he can't do. And is way too serious about everything. Even when he makes bad decisions, it still ends up working out for him somehow.
Betty is fine in Season 1 but becomes an unlikable SJW from Season 2 onward. But she is still a far better character than Veronica, the worst character in the show. Yes, she was a rich girl in the comics, but at least she wasn't a bitch. In the show she is a total unlikable bitch, who is yet written as a protagonist because she wants to use her riches for "good" or something, therefore we should like her. Like Archie, she can also do no wrong.
Cheryl Blossom's character has ton of potential but gets wasted on stupid storylines.
The adults are the best characters in the show - specifically the dads - Jughead's dad, Archie's dad, Betty's dad, Veronica's dad - Yet they are wasted because of course the kids know better than they do. That is an overarching theme of this show - parents suck, families suck, adults suck, destroy your relationships with your families because families are pointless, your parents don't know what is best for you. The adult characters exist to be punching bags for the cast of teenagers.
The LGBT agenda is also shoehorned into this show to the point where its extremely in your face almost every episode. It seems like every character is gay or at least bi. The last episode of this show I watched before giving up was an episode where the evil principal wouldn't let a gay kid perform as a drag queen during a talent show so the entire school in protest showed up to school dressed in drag the next day. That was it for me.
Watch Season 1 and leave it at that.

My wife wanted to watch it and she binged it while she was pregnant. I tolerated it for awhile, but the G&G season sealed it on how bad it is.
The random musical episodes are unbearable.
Some of the girls are hot. The Cheryl Blossom chick and Veronica, especially. Wife watched one episode of the most recent season just to see if they could recover from the G&G season and didn't even finish the first episode.
I'll give it that it gives an interesting take on the Archie comics. But way to campy, cheesy, and over the top.
RIP Luke Perry.

The memes of the awful (purposely bad?) writing is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of the show

The only reasons to watch the show really are the women.

I'm so embarrassed but I watch this, Nancy Drew, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (before it got canceled). Nancy Drew has steadily gotten better, while Riverdale has gotten worse after Season 1.
But the Riverdale Reddit page is often hilarious as people post terrible memes, cringey dialogue, etc.
It also makes for a pretty good drinking game. Like, take a shot every time Veronica says, "My BFF Katy Keene!" or when they intentionally change the name of a well-known brand (e.g. Share BnB, 23-Hour Fitness, Glamazon.com, etc.).
I wish they would have killed off Riverdale and continued with Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but at least Nancy Drew has vastly improved since its premiere.

This show is such a guilty pleasure. The writing is bad and I generally skip the musical episodes. It's so campy and one of the only shows that I will truly binge after it hits Netflix. I am never waiting for it to hit Netflix so I can jump into it but when it's been there for a while and I have a long weekend without the wife or kids I'll watch it for like 4 straight days.
I haven't gotten into Nancy Drew or Sabrina though.

quote:amen. most of the time, i just skip them entirely. if i wanted a high school musical, i'd probably watch glee, or high school musical
The random musical episodes are unbearable.
the show has gotten progressively worse, but i'll still watch s5 when it hits netflix. i definitely don't enjoy it enough to sit through commercials anymore.

I binged the first season, it was by accident, it just started playing after another show I watched and was mildly interesting. I didn't make it past season two if I even made it through season 2. That red head is something special though.

Would be unwatchable without the high class arse.

You're putting way too much thought into this show.

One of my favorite critics, Cosmonaut Variety Hour, referenced it when talking about adults writing for teenagers and how TERRIBLE the dialog is for what are supposed to be kids.
