They work. My nephew was 3 and doing slalom runs on that thing. Scared the shite out of me, but he was enjoying himself.

A coworker of mine talked me into getting my boy a balanced bike because her kids loved theirs. So I got my kid one and he never rode it. Actually sold it today in a yard sale for $3

We started our son on one when he was 3 or 4 and he took to it almost instantly. So much easier to teach them balance with that without having to worry about pedaling.

They work well. When he graduated off training wheels his balance was all off because he used to like to shake the bike as he would ride.

Balance bike got him out of that habit quickly.

I listen to Bill Burr's podcast. Awhile back he told a story about how he wanted to teach his little girl to ride a bike like a regular kid, with training wheels, ended up buying a balance bike.. Didn't feel comfortable after buying it and tried to put training wheels on it, but you can't.. He said he thought it was some new dumn hippie way of trying to teach your kid how to ride.. But gave it a chance and his kid picked it up pretty quick and that he now thinks its better than training wheels. Like I said, that's according to Bill Burr.

There are some balance bikes with a rear wheel that allows the bike to stand up on its own. See the Velo brand rear tire for example. I do not think these are actually helpful as the child is not learning how a real bike responds to weight shifts. And although these bikes are more stable for the kid when they are directly over the center of gravity I think they are less forgiving to a child who is tilting and shifting weight.

Long story short - if you want to get one get one with a normal real tire that will respond to your child’s weight shifts like a normal bike. This is also the perfect item to buy used from someone so search Craigslist and Facebook market place for one.

Any recommendations? I've seen some that are ridiculously expensive then when I Google I see like $40 for others.

They work really well. When our kids graduated to pedal bikes it took them about 5 minutes to get used to a real bike. Our son was riding a real one without training wheels at 4 and our daughter at 3 and a half.

They don't look very fun at first, but it won't take long before the kids figure out they can run and coast around. At first the kid will just be walking around with as bike between their legs. Just stick with it for a few weeks and you'll be golden.

None of mine had any desire to do it and we definitely tried. Just had them ride the little regular bike with training wheels and then took them off like we learned as kids. Balance bike was 0/3

We got a Strider. It was around $90. Some are a lot fancier and come with hand brakes. I'm not sure that's necessary. Our kids got used to hand brakes really quick when they started riding their real bikes.

This child is nuts I have a picture of him at 18 months climbing a door frame I think he'd love it over a tricycle.

He already climbs on my daughters first bike with training wheels, but he's not quite big enough / old enough to grasp the full thing.

Buy a regular kid bike and take the pedals/crank off. Balance bike. Put them back one when ready to pedal.

One thing he’s probably love when he’s just a touch bigger is having a real gentle sloped, two sided kicker ramp. You can YouTube them where you basically wet and mold a long piece of plywood and two sides. I made one with a very gradual slope that I could send them down on two wheel bike and it would give them some momentum as they started pedaling.

Having that extra bit of speed really helped their balance when they’d start. The two that I had the ramp for learned to pedal a lot quicker than the first one. It’d likely work great on a balance bike as well on a kid who enjoys it.

Built one with this general shape but more gradual slope.

Balance bikes have rails for their feet to sit on so they can really learn balance
