Independence Day is a 10/10 movie

Watched it last night for the first time in many years. It holds up so well and has every element that makes it a great movie.
It came out in 1996, back when movies were still fun without being jammed pack with politics and other bullshite.
Will Smith has great one-liners and his character is so likable. Jeff Goldblum and the quippy dynamic with his father brings the lol’s. Harvy Fierstein and his raspy voice cracks me up every time.
Vivica Fox and Mary McDonnell are both smoking hot.
Randy Quaid with the GOAT sacrifice and one-liner before getting his revenge.
And the speech by Bill Pullman…still delivers chills to this day.
The special effects hold up well, the story holds up fine, and it’s the perfect movie to show that the world can unite to fight a greater enemy.
Great movie. 10/10. And if you don’t like it, you’re not a true patriot

It's a fantastic movie that we watch every year around this time, but Goldblums character is a huge eco-warrior who bitches about recycling and losing his mind over using nuclear weapons. So there's definitely some of that in the movie.

Loses points for the absurd computer virus plot point.

Tame and tolerable compared to today’s standards

From a couple days ago. The computer thing makes perfect sense honestly:
quote:
That always bugs me when people talk about that. They had that saucer for what, 40 years? And it was hooked up to their computer systems and shite in A51. Not to mention all the technological shite we would’ve learned over the decades of having it. It’s completely plausible that his laptop could be connected to the saucer via the A51 networks. And once he got hooked into that system, it automatically connects to the mothership. And let’s not forget that he’s a computer/technology genius basically, considering he discovered the countdown within the satellite system and located his wife in the White House via her cell phone.
I’m not saying it is completely above reproach, but easily plausible enough for the plot to work without much scrutiny.

Lol at people that don’t think politics are included in movies as long as the movies politics agree with theirs.

Loses point for the Air Force guys laughing in disbelief at Russell Casse for saying he was abducted by aliens when they are literally planning an air strike against aliens.

He did have some character development regarding that though as demonstrated by the joke about getting used to smoking the stogies (not to mention him actually being instrumental in the use of nuclear weapons). Of course, that movie came out at a point where people could still consider different points of view and everybody didn't think anyone who disagreed with them on any points were the devil.

Yeah its cool as frick. I watched the extended version yesterday. It had some filler with Russell Case's family but still so much fun.

I always found this strange that they dismissed his abduction story while the aliens are invading.

I introduced this to my kids last night. I loved watching it for the first time in a while and my kids enjoyed it the first time. It definitely holds up.
