Blue Jackets goalie Matiss Kivlenieks dead at age 24

The story floating around is that he got hit in the chest with a firecracker. Jesus Christ. What a horrific way to go.

Seems like there are two reports, not sure if they are connected or not. Supposedly this happened in Michigan.

He was an up and coming goaltender likely to have a spot on the Jackets’ roster this year after a potential trade of one of their current goalies. From reports it sounds like he was running out of a hot tub to maybe escape a firework incident gone bad, slipped, hit his head and didn’t make it. More details to come but so far such seeing it described as a tragic accident. Edit: turns out it was a chest wound.

Novi Police Department said a mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby.

Alcohol, fireworks, and a hot tub seems like a recipe for disaster. This was a very tragic situation that could have been easily avoided.

Crazy how easy it is for someone to die by way of head trauma. All these street fightsyou see on YouTube and tigerland bar fights are one bad fall away from turning deadly.

Yeah sounds like it wasn’t a head injury. Poor guy got shot by a firework.

We had about 15 of those mortar style last night in the backyard
I can easily see the concussion from that causing a fatal injury
Only thing I can compare it to is those grenade simulators used in war games

I'm done with fireworks, have been for over a decade.
It makes zero difference how careful you are. All it takes is one idiot trying to show off and it can destroy lives. Throw in how these things are made mostly in China and I'm out.
