July 2, 1776 - the delegates to the Second Continental Congress voted on a resolution introduced by the colony of Virginia to declare independence from the British Empire. The resolution carried with 12 colonies voting "yea" on independence, with New York electing to abstain from the vote. Two days later, the delegates would sign their names to the Declaration of Independence, making the move official. By this time, the Revolutionary War had been raging for over a year in Massachusetts. The vote for independence would cause the conflict to spread to the remaining colonies and would last for another seven years. The Treaty of Paris (1783) would eventually bring the American Revolution to an end with Britain formally recognizing U.S. independence.

The British fleet was sitting off the coast of New York at this time. They were (rightfully) scared and the local assembly in New York was a bit pre-occupied as a result so communication with their delegates in Philadelphia wasn't the easiest. Their fears were realized when the British went on to capture New York City soon after and they held it for the entire war.

All they should have been concerned about was gender equity. Not freedom from British rule.

Some farmers were originally against the war, such as Benjamin Martin, a South Carolina planter with a brutal military past. Meanwhile, his two eldest sons, Gabriel and Thomas, couldn't wait to enlist in the newly formed "Continental Army." When South Carolina decided to join the rebellion against England, Gabriel immediately signed up to fight...without his father's permission.

Long story short, Gabriel was captured. Thomas died attempting to save Gabriel. Gabriel died attempting to kill Thomas's killer. Benjamin joined the fight and got revenge on the dude who killed both his sons and eventually banged his smoke show of a sister in law.

It took some enormous cojones to stand up to the world super power at the time, and for principles that empowered the common citizen rather than some aristocrat ruling class. I don’t really think the average American appreciates how incredibly unique and off the reservation what took place in America really was. We know the story, but I’m not too sure we really understand how special and rare that story is. Of course, if we understood the fullness of what a blessing it really is, we would never squander it or allow anyone in power to squander it for us.

And now they want to add trigger warnings to the declaration of independence and the constitution.

We have taken a huge gift and squandered it

The social justice crowd hates "insurrection" so much they'd probably side with the British.

Same here. My dad’s side landed in America in 1620 in Connecticut and made their way down to Virginia where the descendants eventually fought in the war for Independence, and then later the war of northern aggression, and so on. The concepts of “freedom” and “the right to self government” never dies.
