The House voted Tuesday to remove the bust of Chief Justice Roger Taney and statues of Confederate President Jefferson Davies and others who supported the Confederacy from the U.S. Capitol.

Democrats were unanimous in their support for the bill and were joined by 67 Republicans, with the bill passed by a vote of 285-120.

The vote comes after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Democrats on the House Floor of trying to hide their party's 'shameful' racist past.

'Let me state a simple fact. All the statues being removed by this bill are statues of Democrats,' the Republican leader said, adding that he planned to vote in favor of the legislation. 'I think the bill should go further. Maybe it's time the Democrats change the name of their party.'

McCarthy said the bill showed that the Democrats were 'desperate' to prove that their party has progressed from their 'days of supporting slavery, supporting Jim Crow laws or supporting the KKK.'

The Democratic House majority has been proactive since last summer's protests over the death of George Floyd in removing symbols of the Confederacy from prominent locales.

Last June House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she would be removing portraits of four former House speakers who sided with the south to mark Juneteenth.

'They were all Democrats,' McCarthy also pointed out Tuesday.

Excellent. I’m glad our lawmakers are focused on solving real issues, right now.

Also glad the IC/FBI are worried about RMVE-WS attacks over the 4th of July. This despite having no evidence of a threat.

I can disagree with the decision. However, they didn't Taliban the things. They at least voted.

Removing a bunch of racist democrat statues seems politically ironic, yet few, if any citizens, get that point.

So, getting rid of all these statues solves all the problems, right?

It's just gay marriage. It's just a flag. It's just some statues. It's just tranny story hour. It's just a stolen election. It's just an oppressive regime under which your liberties were secretly usurped decades ago.

Interesting that it’s taken 150 years for the full dismantling of Southern civil war history.

Can’t think of any other war loser who’s gotten to keep their history around that long.

If they tear down the statues and take all the wypipo’s ARs and AKs, the inner cities will finally be at peace.

Good.

And also

Someone should educate Kevin on the lily white movement. People like William Taft and Herbert Hoover were leaders in that movement. Both parties have a history of being anti-black. It’s that Republicans today have proven themselves to be pro Confederacy and for the most part anti-Civil Rights.

Probably around 98% of the population had no idea those were there. But I’m glad their focus is on chunks of iron collecting dust.

Those guys didn't do enough drugs, commit enough crimes, or arm rob enough pregnant women to deserve statues.

I don't oppose removing those statues and Thurgood Marshall statue? No way. Dude was complicit with J. Edgard Hoover, even had him spy on Malcolm X. He was also not proactive in having black/minorities clerk for him. Rather put up a statue of TRM Howard instead.
