It is what they are famous for, thin cut catfish. I personally really like it, but guess I could understand why others wouldnt.

Mike Anderson's spinach and artichoke dip comes with really thin cut catfish as well thats used to as a chip, very good.

That said, it is very good and I’ve eaten it numerous times at Crawford’s.

Overall, personally I put Mike Anderson’s fried catfish at the top of my list, but you can’t go wrong with many of the places (Parrains, Roberto’s, etc) already mentioned.

Does china fish taste better than domestic catfish or is it just cheaper? sounds pretty nasty but ive never been to or heard of Crawfords before until this thread

I believe Swai is another. ACME Oyster House used to serve swai, and just had it listed as “fried fish” on the menu.

It’s illegal to call it “catfish” if it isn’t a domestic product

It’s definitely cheaper for the restaurants to buy the Asian/Chinese catfish vs the domestic farmed raised channel catfish, and I’m not sure they are passing those saving on to the customer, but I wouldn’t say it tastes any better or worst than USA farm raised catfish - that might be more related to skill of the chef.

Most of those Chinese catfish are farm raised and their processing plants are modern and clean - the product is actually quite good and sanitary but I’d trust USA catfish over the imports - and that was long before Covid entered the picture. But in Louisiana if it says “catfish’ on the menu, it better be USA domestically harvested catfish, if it isn’t the restaurant is breaking the law and there could be significant consequences and fines if caught.

Cheaper yes, ponds full of human excrement - well back in old days before China became modernized that might have partially true but today not really. The USA exports massive amounts of soybeans to China, and though I haven’t looked at the numbers in some time, 60-65% of those soybeans are used in the manufacture of fish feeds used in China. One might argue that Chinese catfish imported to the USA were raised in part on USA grown soybeans - if that makes anyone feel better about eating Chinese catfish.

Yep, and the only reason why I am not a fan of their whole catfish is due to potentially choking on fish bones.

Mason's grill is a solid choice, for just about anything on the menu. I like the way they do their fish and shrimp, some of the popular places I am not a fan of, I don't like the thin chips of fish, I want to actually taste the fish not the breading.

The soul food restaurant is Zachary (Martha's Bistro maybe?) Is the best catfish I have had. I ate it all the time for the two years we lived there post flood.

It closed during covid unfortunately. Never had their catfish but they had some good food.

The catfish and red beans was my go to comfort meal. The family was sweet. I am sorry to hear that.

Eta: this showed up on FB as my memory from today in 2018-Today I only had to feed myself so I didn't have to convince anyone else to eat soul food. Martha's bistro is hands down my favorite restaurant in zachary. Red beans and catfish everytime.

I’ve posted this over the years and it’s from 2007 but I can’t imagine it’s changed completely.

Regardless, I do my best to avoid Chinese aquaculture. I’m sure I’m not always successful but it’s something I’m aware of as most should be.

Domestic farm raised catfish is still extremely reasonably priced and they are light years ahead of where the industry was in the late 70’s when it started and everyone with some land decided to be catfish farmers before most going belly up. My neighbor got into it and lost their arse and their farm is now Bennett’s Ski School.

When they first started , Purina was selling dry cat food for fish feed and they were bad and bottom feeding and it tasted like it. But over the years they have come up with floating food which keep them out of the mud and makes their taste a lot cleaner and mild.
