Panhandlers in Mandeville/Covington

I’ve noticed a influx of these people on the sides of the road within the past year and it ticks me off to no end… they sit and beg for money but will not accept your offering of food. Why aren’t the freaking sheriff or city police doing something about this. There’s a labor shortage for crying out loud!

I’ve lived on the north shore for over a decade and have only seen a handful, they accept my pet food offering anytime I’ve offered. Where exactly are you seeing this so I can troll the frick out of them by offering up Alpo?

I live in Slidell so as this board knows, half the local population is homeless or on welfare. Panhandlers are a common thing
Mandeville is surprising though. I would never imagine they’d put up with the riff raff over there

The people you should really be mad at are the idiots who give panhandlers money. The only reason these bums aren’t forced to get jobs is because making money on the side of the road is so damn easy.
The people they “dupe” into giving them money are the real problem here.

There is no law against it.I think the only time they can do something is if the person is actively impeding traffic or causing a hazard. Standing in the median doesn’t count. Slidell once put in place an ordinance but it was quickly shot down by a ACLU threat.

Can't say I've seen too many in Mandeville, the occasional one off the 22 exit on 190 is the only spot I can think of. Now in Covington by Walmart/HD/Lowes... it's pretty much daily.
Someday people will wake up and stop giving these bums incentive to keep doing what they're doing. "Night of the Living Homeless" South Park episode should be required viewing for every adult.

Who are the people in the neon shirts? What are they peddling?

Starting to see a Scammy Tammy begging on the reg at the Target complex exit on 21. At least once a week you see the gaggle of “charity workers” trolling cars around there too on the highway with their buckets and safety vests.
Did Baton Rouge crack down on them? I had to go there this past Saturday, and covered a good bit of area and didn’t see a single one. Very different than my last visit a couple of years ago, when they seemed to be everywhere especially around Bluebonnet.

Lol
We have way more people than Mandeville or Covington so while there’s a few panhandlers around here, on a per capita basis, it’s less.
I typically give them money. I saw a lady the other day who was so dirty and sunburned, there was no way I was NOT going to give her something. I gave her a few buck and felt guilty that I didn’t take her to, and pay for, a doctor.

Our society is set up to take care of the legitimate poor via homeless shelters and other assistance. I don’t need a bunch of filthy drug addicts who think it’s cool to panhandle annoying the shite out of me and trying to wave at me at every intersection

This is what it boils down to. As far as I’m concerned there is no reason for them to be out there if they are only homeless. There are enough programs, charities, shelters, and food pantries out there to take care of them. The ones begging are doing so because they choose to be addicts. They don’t want to follow the cardinal rule of most of these programs: no drugs. Every dollar you give them will 99.9% of the time go towards their habit.

Sherlock Holmes had this covered in 1891 in The Man with the Twisted Lip.
quote:
Mr. St. Clair has been leading a double life, as a respectable businessman, and as a beggar. In his youth, he had been an actor before becoming a newspaper reporter. In order to research an article, he had disguised himself as a beggar for a short time, and was able to collect a surprising amount of money due to a skillset uncommon to beggars; his actor's skills enabled him to emulate a more sympathetic character with make-up, as well as provide a repertoire of witty dialogue with which to entertain passers-by to offer coins—he was as much a street performer as a beggar. Later, he was saddled with a large debt, and returned to the street to beg for several days to pay it off. His newspaper salary was meagre and, tempted by the much larger returns of begging, he eventually became a "professional" beggar. His takings were large enough that he was able to establish himself as a country gentleman, marry well, and begin a respectable family. His wife and children never knew what he did for a living, and when arrested, he feared exposure more than prison or the gallows. But there is no murder, so he is released, and Holmes and the police agree to keep Mr. St. Clair's secret as long as no more is heard of Hugh Boone.

You, and everyone that does this, should be dragged out of their car and beaten with a sack of floppy dicks .
This is why we can’t get rid of them
