To start with, I am not a gear head at all so I would be interested the opinions of folks with some experience.

Currently not running. I was told that it was running when it was parked but hasn't cranked since (a few months).

Guy claims the only issue he was aware of is that he knew he was having some injector issues.

4 door. Exterior and interior are in really good shape. Was primarily used to pull horses to shows. White.

Guy is in the middle of divorce and is asking $2,500 as it sits.

However, I think i remember hearing conversations about this model/motor combination having serious problems.

So for 2500 do you think it is worth the risk?

Opinions welcome.

Sounds like it won't be 2500 long

I had a 2007 with the 6oh and learned a good bit about then motor . That setup was plagued with issues from day one. Issues with EGR, HG, oil coolers , casting sand left in cooling jackets , radiator failures , leaking bed plates, FICM failures, and more. Without it running it could be anything from a battery , FICM or the motor being hydro locked from a failed cooler . If you want a heck
of a challenge and a potentially very expensive project go for it. I would personally pass and find one running that’s already been deleted/bulletproofed.

If you are not a gear head and experienced mechanic you better have some dep pockets. It might cost $100 dollars to get it going or $10,00. I had a 6.0 that blew 2 engines under warranty before I got rid of it.

Something else you can do to see the history if you want. Get the VIN and have a Ford dealer pull the oasis report on it. It will at least show the work done on it by any Ford dealer.

Good place for a Cummins swap. 6.0 is a little better than the 6.4 but not much, those two engines are some of the worst diesels ever put in a truck.

Thanks to all that replied.

Everyone seems confirm my apprehension regarding this motor.

It's a shame too. Those motors are strong as hell when they're running right.

I'm currently looking for an 06 or 07 that's been deleted and studded.

Just had a conversation with an Engineer that I work with. He said there is a guy one town over that will "bullet proof" it for 6,000

Now I am trying to convince myself that I don't really want to spend 8,500....but if I could end up with a good used truck for that.....

I think I need someone to do an intervention to save me from myself.

the $6,000 probably assumes it is already running. you are going to spend something to get it to that point.

Yea. 2500 is a damn good price for the truck if its in good shape and you want a project or dont mind putting maybe 10k in it. All in all 12k for a good diesel 4x4 isn't bad.

You're way better off finding one already bulletproofed. Even at $2500 the gamble is high. If it needs injectors along with bulletproofing you could easily walk out of the shop owing $10k+. I had an '03 with sticky injectors on top of needing bulletproofing. It was a great truck afterwards, but it didn't come cheap.

Hot shot secret worked for me with sticky injectors . I thought it was a gimmick but it worked. I also swapped to rotella 5w40 which also helped.

Ehhh i disagree. Thats prolly a $25k truck these days in good working condition (without looking, op should check the market)

For $2500, worst case he could part it out and make money on it. Itll definitely be a pretty hefty project to get it on the road though. The $10k number is what I would go into the deal as my best case estimate. If it just needs new batteries and injectors and a bulletproofing, that'll hit 10k easily if its worked.

It helped, but I had an injector go completely bad shortly after. On my cold starts I was lucky if 3 cyclinders would fire at first! I do still miss that truck. It got totaled, but once I did the bulletproofing it was great....and fast.

Checks out.

Unless you want to spend thousands of dollars getting the injectors replaced, you should stay away

I thought I'd read about some outfit in GA that was buying these like hotcakes, bulletproofing the motor and fixing what else needs attention and putting a 50-100k warranty on them? If the motor weak link is addressed, that's a 400k mile vehicle.

Buy the truck put a 7.3 in it, run it until the body rusts out/you die of old age
