I always thought Garth Brooks was a weird guy. Like there was something not right about it.

Mid 1990’s I was watching a news talk show, I don’t remember which one exactly, but Garth was on. At that point in my life, country was not a genre I enjoyed, but I watched the segment anyway. The host had several callers on. About 4 callers in, this women called and said how much she enjoyed his music and what it meant to her. She had a child with some terminal illness which meant lots of time in the hospital, when she wasn’t working, where she would listen to his “no fences” over and over again. Towards the end of the call, Garth says “ma’am, would you mind staying on the line? I’d like to talk to you off air.” So the segments over and the program continues but right before the show ends the host says, I want you all to know that Garth told the women that he’d pay for her to quit her job if she wanted so that she could spend more time with her child.


The next day I went and bought 5 copies of no fences.
