I had no idea Brett passed either. I was Brock’s age and was friends with him. The Catholic school community in EBR is really very small when you think of it. As a 1995 high school graduate it is very sad to think of those we lost: Courtney Myshrall, Jay Giblin, Missy Wall, Andre Dugas, Majorie McNeely, Christy Stegall and the list goes on. Not to mention those of the same age who lost children in fires and siblings to accidents. May they all stay in our prayers and remember we are not promised tomorrow.

I also forgot Kevin Keyser. A very good dude.

Did he go to McKinley Middle, was Friends with a guy named Jason Yates, or played for a soccer team called the Hulks or the Green Machines?
I'm pretty sure Bret played with us at least one year, too. The Hulks and/or Green Machine played two goalies (at same time) at least one year. Drove me nuts. Or in the words of a certain coach, "Gave me the red arse."

Brett was coaching girls basketball the years I knew him and nobody ever had anything bad to say about him and all my memories of him involve him laughing and cutting up with other coaches and players. #Forever44

Great dude. I knew him and know his sister. Good to see that even Tigerdroppings can have a nice thread because of him. RIP

Wow, thank you. Just trying to give Bret the credit he deserves and maybe help someone in the process.

I’m not sure about McKinley Middle but the Hulks soccer team definitely sounds familiar. I’ll have to ask his mom and get back to you on that.

Friends with a guy named Jason Yates,
They knew each other. Would chat if they saw each other out. But didn't really run in the same crowds. But Jason would be out at Sullivan's baseball field pretty regularly.

Bret did play goalie for The Hulks! Also, he didn’t attend McKinley Magnet but his sister did.

I didn't know all of them, but Christy Stegall was a wonderful lady and is missed greatly.

I went to St George with Brett. I'm a year older. His Dad was my 8th grade football coach. Great family and great man. Thank you for such a poignant post. It appears Cohen is in amazing hands. Godspeed

To all the people on this board that didn't have the pleasure of knowing Bret, you would have fricking loved him. He was the kind of friend that was best man to many. Just a normal guy but so much bigger than I could ever explain. If you knew him, you know exactly what I mean.
I still laugh to when I think about his Facebook Post from August 20, 2014. He was in the hospital. Many of his friends checked in on him there, making jokes as usual.
My old FB account has been deleted but I didn't miss an opportunity to pile on him that day via Facebook. I said something to the tune of "stop letting dudes do you in the butt".
That comment is gone but his reply about "using an extension" is still there and just made me laugh again. That's how he was. Always joking and taking everything in life in stride.
Things were light and positive that day.
I'm so sorry for your loss and sincerely appreciate you coming in here today to clear things up and put some sassy OTers in their place.

After conferring with a couple people on the board, I never played on the same team nor went to the same school as Brett, but I do remember his face.
Just wanted to say that even in the few games all those decades ago, I remember him which I can't really say about others on the teams I played against.
Sorry for your and everyone else's loss.
I remember him as an imposing competitor, star of his team.
