Huge and somewhat overlooked play from last night

Dugas’ play to score the tying run.
His break for home was exactly at the moment Beloso made contact with the ball. Absolutely perfect head first slide to get underneath the tag. If he doesn’t execute all of this to perfection he is out at the plate and we have two outs and are still down a run.
The play could be considered a turning point in the game.
It’s those types of smart hustle plays from a great player that can change a season for a team

If he’s out, we’re down 7-6 with 2 outs and things would have looked bleek after getting men on 2nd and 3rd to start the inning
Thank God he was safe

First and third, but then Thompson would have had to deliver his hit with the pitcher pumped up instead of in the middle of a nervous breakdown.

It was one of those plays where PM's philosophy of being ultra aggressive on the bases paid off. It probably wasn't a great play to try to score on. The ball was hit relatively hard to a first baseman playing up a little. But Dugas never hesitated and exerted max effort on the slide.
Run that same play 10 times and Dugas probably gets thrown out 5. It was a risk that paid off in a HUGE way.

Didn't this play happen to us almost exactly against Florida in the CWS??

The bad throw helped as well

With 1 out, I thought it was the right call to send him. If you hold him the second out is going to be recorded at first, and you're relying on a two out hit, not knowing, of course, that a balk would ensue. And if he gets thrown out you still have a runner in scoring position. Now, if the ball had been hit so hard that it was obvious Dugas would be out by ten feet, you probably shouldn't send him, though some would argue that you make the guy make a throw in that pressure situation and see if he screws up.

Alternatively, the game changes completely if they just concede the run and take the out.
Who knows how Thompson handles the AB like you said.

I’m just glad we don’t have to see Oregon’s first baseman anymore. Dude gave me the creeps

It does point to a pretty big hole though. We don't have a single PH option to insert into a crucial situation at the bottom of the lineup. Losing Hampton and Travinski hurt

I understand why they didn't want to give up the run, but in that situation it may have been the smartest thing to do.

Bianco's diving catch in the second inning I believe. Minimized the damage I think kept us from completely losing momentum.

Well give some credit to the coaches too as it was probably their call.
You can call the play with the infield in where the runner judges the ball, where it’s hit, how hard it’s hit and decides, but that takes a split second away from him.
Or you can decide in advance that your runner is going on any ground ball. That gives him the jump, but in a sharp hit right at a fielder he is probably out.
It’s one of those plays where the runner and coach are smart and aggressive if the runner is safe and they are dumb if he’s out, at least how most fans view those things.
It’s like running or throwing the ball on fourth and goal from the 2 yd line. Whichever way you go was smart if you make it, dumb if you don’t.

You need to understand that all this is predetermined before the ball is pitched.
The manager analyzes the situation and tells the runner to go on contact. That means go on anything not in the sir.
No one reads the play. No one analyzes how hard the ball is it or who it is hit to. The base runner goes as soon as the ball is it. The base coach doesn’t do anything. There’s no time for that.

Certainly it was a calculated and understandable risk (particularly given the two guys who would be batting next).
Objectively it probably wasn't a great ball on which to try to score. But the aggressive approach of leaving on contact...coupled with the slight hesitation of the OU first baseman gave Dugas the literal split second necessary to beat the tag.

That was an incredible slide to evade the tag.

Speaking of Dugas and running the bases: In the prior game when he hit the home run and was rounding third, it looked to me that he brushed off what appeared to be a congratulatory pat by the third base coach. Then, on the inside the park/triple and error, he seemed to ignore the third base coach completely.

What about Drost? I know he looked lost the night before, but did get a single.

Yeah he got a hit but looked really bad the other two at bats. No way you could have trusted him to come in there and make contact against a LHP. Beloso didn't give me much confidence either but he did come through. We need one more bat to step up

I am thankful to that umpire for not having his head up his a$$ on that play.
