Is there a law mandating a drawbridge opens every 30min?

The Madisonville bridge is complete BS, the fact that they open it every 30 minutes for the whole day whether a boat needs to come through or not is asinine.

Agreed, I've always hated that with that bridge because there are only 3 ways across that damn river.

I believe so for that bridge. It is managed by the Coast Guard.

Drawbridges seem like architectural short sightedness. The long term costs of maintenance, operation, etc have to exceed the long term convenience of just building a slightly more elevated permanent structure.

Without drawbridges, we never would have been blessed with the Bee Gees' classic " Jive Talkin'"

Isnt it every hour?
I know they did a study a while back and changed the times it opened and it was awesome for traffic, but I think they decided on not keeping it.

There is a law that bridges can’t block navigable waterways. As far as the openings that probably is up for debate.

I remember as a kid my mom and her now ex were in Mobile bay coming in at night in bad weather. they were on a sailboat and the draw bridge (at the time) on Dog River would not open due to the bridge operator falling asleep - they damn near got pushed onto the rocks from the waves and wind before a motorist stopped and woke the guy up.
was very happy when they replaced it.

I don’t think you have that quite right. Bridges block navigable waterways all the time.
I think what you were looking for is something like boats have the right of way when it comes to bridges in navigable waters. Meaning automobiles wait for boats to cross, not the other way around.

The Madisonville bridge is complete BS,
But I do agree that it is beyond stupid that there is the option for it to open every 30min. Change it to hourly at the least IMO.

I sit at it multiple times a week, it definitely opens when a boat isn't needing to pass.
They changed this so that is doesn't open from 4pm-6pm. Still opens every 30mins the rest of the time.
quote:
Currently, on both weekdays and weekends during daytime hours from 6 a.m. through 7 p.m., the draw opens on signal every half hour, and during nighttime hours from 7 p.m. through 6 a.m., it opens on signal.

From 33CFR

?117.500Tchefuncta River. The draw of the S22 Bridge, mile 2.5, at Madisonville, shall open on signal, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., the draw need only open on the hour and half hour, except that, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday except Federal holidays, the draw need only open on the hour. If the waterway is used for commerce or has been used for commerce, it is a navigable waterway and the above would apply.

quote:Perhaps you just can't see the boat passing or they are doing some sort of test. Living here for ~30 years I'm pretty certain it is only if there is a boat needing to pass. Or I could just be dead wrong and have lived a lie to myself for decades.

To make matters worse, I believe it's 30 minutes from when it last opened, not when it last closed. So being that the bridge typically stays open for 7-10 minutes, the bridge actually opens closer to every 20 minutes.
All for fricking leisure boats.
