Why do old people say Macdonald’s instead of McDonald’s? Is this a southern thing or an old person thing?

Strictly speaking, there is no difference between Mac and Mc. The contraction from Mac to Mc has occurred more in Ireland than in Scotland,

Nobody of Scottish, Irish, or Ulster-Scot lineage whose surname starts with Mc introduces themselves as “Mick whatever.” We are Mac whatever. Mac simply means “son of.”

Anyone who says MickDonalds is just ignorant.
