Blood pressure issues

Im 48. Little overweight. Always had good cholesterol and bp right around 120/80ish.
Been adding way too much salt to my food and eating already salty food, but it's never seem to affect me like it has of late.
Been getting dizzy spells, especially when I stand up every once in a while. Got home from work and checked my bp on our home device (pretty accurate machine).. it was like 158/109. Started drinking lots of water to maybe flush out the sodium. Felt pretty much normal and hour or so later and my bp was close to normal. Decided to eat a "healthy" salad for dinner, and my dumb butt put a few turkey pepperonis and a little bacon crumbs on it, along with too much salad dressing (didn't realize how much sodium salad dressing had in it)... bp went high again. It's coming back down now. Right now it is 146/94. High again.
Gonna set up a checkup with a doctor of course.. been a couple of years since my last checkup.
Question is do any of you have these spikes in bp from sodium like this? or is hypertension usually a condition that's not so sporadic?

I get that. It just seems like something changed. Ive always ate a little unhealthy. I actually have lost 25 pounds in the last few months, lots of yard work and eating less and healthier. I sort of been eating a little unhealthier of late though. Maybe my body has become more sensitive or something.
Im definitely taking this serious. Any health issue gets me all anxious. Cut out salt. Drink more water, lay off Coke Zero which I drink waaaaay too much of.

Parents have it? I’ve always believed genetics impact it more than salt.

You're probably more overweight than you realize you are, elevating your blood pressure. Take the meds, change your diet, start exercising, then you can get off the meds. Start tracking your calories and sodium, you'll be surprised how much your intake really is.

Can't fix it in 1 day. Keep a log. Take your BP same time every day after sitting for a few minutes. Bring log to the doctor. It might save you an extra doc visit. While waiting on doc cut back on salt at a minimum. Exercise if you can manage to push yourself. It's hard for many to start. Good luck.

Have you had a history of hypertension for a long time?
Mine has seemed to come from nowhere.
Like I said earlier, always had good bp and cholesterol.

Everyone has significant variations in their BP every day. Making a single healthy choice for dinner is not going to make a real difference.
Monitor your BP and see your doctor if you keep good records of your BP you can provide them so the doc has better insight.

Careful. Threads like these are Mingo magnets.

That salad I ate had over 50% of my recommended sodium daily allowance.

I didnt mean to convey the salad was a trophy of a meal. I just wanted to not intake much sodium in my dinner tonight. I screwed that all up though.

Reading up on causes... most are the common known factors. One thing listed is sleep apnea, which I have always thought I have and want to get tested.

At your age you should be going to the doctor at least once a year for a checkup

Salt doesn’t affect everybody’s blood pressure a lot but there are a certain percentage of people in which salt affects it greatly.
If I were to eat a large little Ceasers pizza, my blood pressure would go up more than hitting a rail of coke.
Genetics are the biggest factor though, followed by obesity and alcohol
