Anyone watch the first episode? I thought it was pretty good, but race seems to be a huge focus. I get why with Cus being old white dad figure and black kid from the streets but it just seems a little too much.
Still it's good so far and I like the flow.
Oh and man time hasn't been kind to Riddick Bowe. He looks horrible.

I watched Tyson from his early days and have seen other such shows. This one is decent for network TV.
As for race, he is black, and race has always been an issue in boxing. Great white hope and all. Many white folks hated Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard but loved Gerry Cooney. LOL.
That said, I didn’t notice race being an outsized issue in the first episode. It’s part of his story and a factor in how the public perceived him.

False. White folks love Sugar Ray.

What bothered me was that one guy that talked about Tyson getting into "the white man's world, with white man possessions", it's the way he referenced it. Like Tyson was the first black athlete with money, or the first black person with money. It was strange.

This also angered me quite a bit. They have "reporter" who prolly didn't even know Tyson talking about how Cus wasn't a saint and just using Tyson. The rest of the doc talks about how Tyson was lost when Cus died and a piece of him died with Cus. Sounds like Mike loved the man and wasn't being used by him. Then they have another "reporter" talk about how other white people just wanted Tyson for his money. Every person they interviewed who was close to Mike said his 2 first managers (both white) were the only people who actually looked out for him. Then, Don King comes in and his first wife clearly are only there to mooch off of him. But the white people are the ones using him?

Yeah I wasn't a fan of how they portrayed Cus. No, he wasn't a saint and obviously he also benefited from Tyson being a child prodigy, but they definitely seemed to have a much deeper relationship than Cus had with other fighters that he was basically just managing. And Cus is long dead and can't defend himself.

Yeah, the white people in Tyson's life were trying to help him become successful beyond his wildest dreams.
The people that fricked him over for money were all black. Like, that's all pretty common knowledge to casual fans of Tyson's career.

That guy was the most full of shite of anyone on the show thus far. He acted like Tyson was the first black boxing champ to invade a white world.
