Texas Hill Country State Parks

I might be a little late in planning this vacation but was looking to rent an RV and tour the Texas Hill Country over the summer.
Which State Parks are the better ones? Any particular private RV campgrounds that are really nice? It will be myself, 8 yo daughter, and 11 yo niece. We would like to go to Schlitterbahn and do a little hiking and swimming in rivers.

Garner is nice but very crowded and it may be too late to get reservations there.
Perdenales is really nice too.

Memorial Day I presume?
You will need reservations for all of these.
1. Garner - if Memoral Day is your time frame, you won't likely get in. Most popular state park in Texas and worth the reputation.
2. Enchanted Rock - good day-trip park, especially with kids in tow.
3. Lost Maples - good in spring/early summer, great in the fall.
4. Pedernales Falls - not sure how high the water is right now, but in some ways resembles Garner.
5. Inks Lake - another great family park IMO. Various types of watercraft rentals available.

Just sometime in July. I was planning on going for a week. Maybe 2 nights each in 3 different parks. I see some availability but im a bit overwhelmed with the choices.

It’s going to be hot. Really hot. But do things early and have options with water.
Pedernales typically has water flow. My kids enjoyed an inflated tube and ride the little rapids at the calm part. You probably can’t get into Garner at this point. Jacobs well doesn’t have much besides jumping in the hole. And the water is absolutely freezing. It’s still a cool thing to see. Most places are requiring reservations so get on that.

In addition to the ones already said, Colorado bend state park is solid with good hikes and scenery, and Hill Country state natural area has some amazing views

That might put you in the hospital in July with two kids. In the heat of summer there probably won’t be anyone out there to help you if something goes wrong.
It’s my favorite place in the Hill Country.

Upper 90's usually but can be above 100. But the nights are cooler than in Texas cities like Austin or Dallas, it can be pretty nice at night and early in the morning. You wouldn't want to be hiking after about noon but the heat is not anything someone from Louisiana can't handle.

yes it will be hot
make sure one or more in your party carries a pack with water I think the best most comfortable way is a small pack with water bladders
we are going to moab in July. Plan to hit hikes early and relax/recreate mid day and then hike again late afternoon

It’s more a combination of heat, lack of shade, and the way younger kids will go wide open until they hit the wall and monkey out. Then you’ve got barely moving, worn out kids trying to get back to the car.
I’m not trying to scare you. Just carry plenty of water and make them drink it. They’ll love it out there.

I like this one as well as a good summer park. It has water + caves so it has options that feel slightly cooler than some others. And if you're too late for reservations there are a couple places in San Saba you can hook up a trailer.
E-rock is balls hot in july. Our summer climbing routine (way back when before reservations were a thing) was to get there in the evening right before they closed the gate, hike in, climb something by headlamp, sleep below what we wanted to do the next day, climb that at first light, and then leave.
I haven't been to south llano river but it looks decent as well

Ahh gotcha. I’m in Baton Rouge and used to the heat. I thought it was some other level of heat y’all were talking about.
I planned on spending as much time as possible near water that they could swim in. I’ll just have to prepare for the hikes and threaten them with IVs if they don’t drink water

Ha I kind of forgot about the heat aspect. Good catch. Still, great overlooked park. Lush scenery and very few crowds compared to Garner. Colorado bend is more child friendly . As said above, there’s water and a waterfall, good scenery (an awesome overlook spot high up over the river ), with some light hiking that should be the right level of difficulty for a family outing.

If you're going to Schlitterbahn, Landa Park has a little trail. Panther trail or something; it's a mile or two long, and you'd never know you're in town. The Comal is right there for tubing as well. You'll go right by the Schlitterbahn if you float the Comal.
Towards SA the Comanche Tower is a cool little hike, and Government Canyon has some dinosaur tracks (you'd never know what they were if it didn't tell you), and long or short hikes.
Those are all closer to New Braunfels than the other suggestions.

Where do you live? It's that hot everywhere in Texas in July.
I'd suggest only choosing places where you can have some water activities during the day.
Garner is fabulous and an absolute Texas icon. It books up as soon as the days open. However, rather than a state park, I'd look for a private campground in the Leakey or Concan areas. Find someplace on the Frio so the kids can play in the water and y'all can hang out. Google tubing on the Texas rivers if you don't know about it. Also, it looks like the nightly dances at Garner are back! YAY!
Maybe stay there 2-3 nights and hang in the river a few days and then maybe stay at Pedernales or somewhere near there. Enchanted Rock is awesome, but you will need to go early in the morning. Lost Maples is very nice, but pretty much just a place to hike and pretty far out in the middle of nowhere. I went last July and we were lucky with an overcast day and we went early.
If you don't want to go all the way to the Frio, look at something near Blanco State Park, Pedernales Falls, or Guadalupe and float the Comal with the kids.
