The University of Virginia (UVA) announced Thursday that it will mandate coronavirus vaccines for in-person students in the fall.

The announcement marks a significant development in the discussion around vaccine mandates: UVA is one of the largest public schools in Virginia. Previously, The College of William & Mary was the only public school that had announced plans to mandate vaccines for the fall term.

Virginia institutions had initially held off on instituting any kind of mandate, questioning the legality of such policies, NBC 29 reported in late April.

"Many legal scholars have interpreted that as saying that people cannot be required to take a vaccine that is under an emergency use authorization," said Lisa Lee, professor of public health at Virginia Tech. "They can be when it has full approval, so that’s where the hitch is."

I’m sure that Thomas Jefferson is proud.

Just don't buy tickets. Of course, the vaccine is the least of reasons to not buy LSU tickets.

I’m sure this isn’t the first vaccine they have required.

Virginia ought to change their motto from “Sic semper tyrannus” to something more fitting like “all hail the government”

And if you think mandatory vaccinations are at the very most a mid-20th century phenomenon, in 1809 Massachussetts mandated the smallpox vaccine and many states followed suit.

Their website currently lists MMR vaccine as a requirement for enrollment. How long have they had that?

is it fair to compare COVID-19 to smallpox in terms of fatality rate? and specifically at the 17-25 age range?

I don't really have an opinion on this one way or another. But the for the folks who are against the vaccine, they won't be appeased when the vaccines do have that full approval.

So at what point do you draw the line to infringe on people’s liberties? 10 percent, 20 percent, 30 percent?

The fact remains that state public health authorities have exercised the ability to mandate and regulate vaccines for pretty much the entire history of the U.S. This isn’t something new.

I can't imagine requiring a vaccine for a virus that has a 99.6% survival rate.

Not a fan of the requirement but vaccines have always been required to attend a university. COVID-19 is a little different but there are exemption processes normally.

Anyway, UVA won’t be the only one. Guaranteed

valid point and I’m certainly no anti-vaxxer. I’m probably more vaccinated than most on this board due to international business travel.

I’m just asking common sense questions, seeing how common sense has been thrown out the window when it comes to COVID-19
