Admirable, but that's some serious generational wealth to turn down
Must hate Detroit

According to CBS Sports, Matt Campbell turned down an 8-year, $68.5 million contract to join the Lions this winter, before the team hired Dan Campbell as coach.

Matt Campbell, who grew up in Massillon, Ohio, near Lions executive Chris Spielman's home town of Canton — Spielman led the Lions coaching search and is believed to have spearheaded their interest in Campbell — posted a message on Twitter on Jan. 10 saying he was staying at Iowa State.

The 8 year deal is basically the Lions going “we are going to suck for the next 3 years but we won’t fire you” so I’m not shocked he didn’t want to waste his first NFL shot on the lions

The big boy college jobs are paying $10M+ per year and he will be able to name his next big college job this time next year. USC, for example, might be willing to pay him more per year than the Lions offered.

The talk has been that he's waiting for ND/elite Big 10 job to open. With all the change going on in CFB why not cash in with the Lions.

his buyout will drop from $9.4 million to $4 million and

Starting at Iowa State’s seventh win, Campbell will earn $250,000 per win for each Cyclone victory.

If ND or OSU came open, he would be at or near the top of their lists and both jobs would pay him $9M or more annually.

Who the frick wants to go to Detroit, the Dim's have destroyed that city
Who the frick wants to go to the Lions, who are in Detroit

The lions are underdogs in every game except the eagles that’s a push. Yikes

He’s waiting for LSU to call

Yeah like 3 places are paying that, calm down.
He should have taken it, especially if it’s all guaranteed. Even if they fired you after 4 years, that’s over $30 million and you can go back to college.
Wonder what Dan Campbell thinks of the deal, doubt he got anywhere close to that.

They’re trying to ruin every city. Name a large city that’s on the upswing.
But that would be hard to turn down. I’m sure there’s nice places right outside of Detroit.

Would trade BK for him 10 times out of 10.

Saban doesn't even make 10+ per year.

He also would've been able to do that after he was done with the Lions job.

I could maybe see their real big money people getting involved and hypothetically offering that to Urban this past year but not Matt Campbell.

Detroit was screwed several decades ago.

I love Matt Campbell but don't see him being a NFL guy. Hell of a coach.
I'd definitely go after him if Mullen moved on though.

I have a ton of respect for him.
I wonder with the changes in transfer rules and the NIL stuff will more coaches make the jump.

Too young to throw his career away on that franchise.

It's Detroit...the Lions....
Probably a wise choice for him. I'm sure it's hard to turn down that kind of money but, with the job he is doing at Iowa State he can do 2 things -
A) Remain at Iowa State for a long time and get paid
B) Jump to a National Powerhouse / Name brand program in a couple of years, get paid BIG and win BIG
Going to the Lions just isn't a wise choice for him. He goes there, gets paid, but loses like everyone else. Then what? He's rich but... a couple of years later he's fired like everyone else and then he's on Saban's shadow staff for a couple of years before taking a job at an FCS or mid-major again.
And he may love it at Iowa State. Maybe he's happy.

Guys like Lincoln Riley and Dan Mullen are making $6 mil a year. There's a big difference between 6 and 10. USC isn't giving Iowa St's coach $10 mil a year. Or $8.75 for that matter.

Even if he goes 0-fer with the Lions there's no way a guy with his college resume is only getting a FCS or mid-major college job.
