quote:Agreed, and I’ll add that USA had mediocre offense in general.
Baker played on a team with mediocre QB play that also struggled to pass protect.
The head coach from ‘18-‘20 was fired at year’s end last season after going 9-26 over his tenure there.
All this being said, Baker may blossom into the real deal.
We shall see.

I think Baker is solid, but 1 thing that pushed him put of the draft is his complete lack of agility per his pro day results. His 3 cone and other quickness/chan he of direction drills literally graded out in the bottom percentile of draft eligible receivers. Maybe it was just a fluke, bc he tested really well on his 40, bench, vert, standing jump. I haven’t watched any tape on the guy, but it sounds like route running might be an issue and his route running might be an issue due to his lack of natural agility.
Sounds like a guy who might be able to run 2-3 simple routes on the outside, but I’d be surprised if he became an absolute stud, because I don’t think he is consistently going to create enough separation from nfl corners.

I was probably Smith’s biggest critic before last year. I don’t think it is fair to call him a bust. He was a late 3rd round pick and has been a quality depth receiver. He steps up and makes a big play from time to time but will probably never be a true #2. It is also possible that Brees has hurt his game. He is probably a little better as a moderate to deep threat receiver than a inside of 20 type of guy.
I think smith's game has a chance to open up with a QB like Winston in the game. I don't think he was a good fit with late-career Brees

Our dumbass beat writers every day in camp “For the 3rd day in a row, Baker just continues to make plays, I think he’s creeping up the depth chart. “
Preseason rolls around and he barely gets any game reps.

Happens every damn year. It’s almost as bad as Les Miles saying he’s going to open up the offense every spring

Brees couldn't throw ball more than 35 yrds last season. The Saints offense scheme was limited during the season. We don't know full capabilities of last year's WR corp. Smith might suprise some people.

Not addressing the #2 receiver position early in the draft was a major mistake. The Saints have been making do with that position for years now and it is just not good enough.
People think you have to have 5 all pro WRs to have a good passing game. Brees’ best season was 2011 and his leading receivers were Jimmy Graham, Sproles, Colston, Lance Moore, P. Thomas, Meachem, Devery and Ingram in that order. Our Super Bowl year, our leading pass catchers were Colston, Devery, Shockey, Reggie Bush, Meachem, P. Thomas, David Thomas, Lance Moore and Heath Adams, in that order.
We currently have MT13, Callaway, Harris, T. Smith, Kamara, Trautman and Lil’Jordan. We had other needs greater than WR and don’t have money to make a big FA signing. Could we do better at WR? Yes, but we aren’t exactly bad at that position like people keep saying. Would you rather have big name WRs like atlanta with a bad record and no OL, DL, etc.?
