Are any Pokémon games after Gen 3 worth playing?

Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is the last generation I played and I was wondering if any of the games that came after that are worth a playthrough.
I don’t expect anything to hold a candle to greatness of the early generations, just looking for something moderately entertaining to kill some time

I’ve always heard good things about gen 4 and 5 though I haven’t played them myself. Sword got a lot of hate but I’ve been enjoying it.

imo, no.
I have high hopes for the new one that appears to be modeled off of BOTW.
Edit: I think most of my dislike of the more recent games have been that I have always thought there needed to be an evolution in gameplay mechanics, while have have introduced plenty of new things since red and blue, I have always thought the thing that needs to change is the turn-based combat, for some reason it bugs the hell out of me.

I just can't envision a pokemon game being as good as gold and silver

Crystal was the goat.
They should remake Crystal like they did with let’s go Pikachu, just without the completely broken moves

Gen 4 and 5 are the peak in terms of mechanics, story (specifically 5), and post-game. After that it starts to dip a lot. Also, if you enjoy Gen 4, I encourage you to play the remakes of Gold/Silver, known as Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Arguably the best mainline Pokemon games ever made.

The series peaked with Platinum in gen 4 IMO

Yeah, Heart Gold/Soul Silver are the greatest Pokémon games ever made. I highly encourage you to play this if you can find them.

Not a Pokemon fan but what? lol
Are you saying you want the Pokemon franchise to turn into an ARPG?

It’s a good idea for a spin-off series at least. I was hoping Legends Arceus would be this way, where you and your pokemon could fight together in a more actiony-way, but it’s turned based still. Oh well

I just think that would be a huge leap to make.
I thought the allure of games like this was the catching, training and collecting units. Exploring an action oriented game with that many units would be insane.
Maybe as a spin off with a limited amount of Pokemon.

I have been playing sword for about a month now. I enjoy it. It has definitely changed since the last version I played (probably Silver/Gold). But I have had fun playing it on the switch, it has that nostalgia feeling. I have not bought the expansion pack yet though I am thinking about it.
I've read great things about the next one to drop.
