U.S. bishops are divided over this issue. Some of the more conservative bishops, such as San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, are calling for Biden and other Catholic elected officials to be denied communion due to their position on abortion.
Others are opposed to the idea, including San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy, who has warned that "the Eucharist is being weaponized and deployed as a tool in political warfare."

quote:

The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop José Gomez, previously informed the doctrinal office that U.S. bishops were preparing at their June meeting to draw up a document addressing "the situation of Catholics in public office who support legislation allowing abortion, euthanasia and other moral evils."

quote:

In a letter dated May 7, the head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), Cardinal Luis Ladaria told Gomez that any such policy requires dialogue first among bishops themselves and then between bishops and Catholic politicians who support abortion rights — whom the cardinal specifically identified as "pro-choice."
The letter was first reported Monday by Catholic News Service and the Jesuit magazine AmericaIn his letter, Ladaria said it would be misleading to present abortion and euthanasia as "the only grave matters of Catholic moral and social teaching that demand the fullest accountability on the part of Catholics."

Amazing to me that Catholic bishops can reconcile abortion and Christianity.

They are lost...and that is why congregants are leaving the Catholic church in droves.

Damn, and my wife gets mad when I take communion without first going to confession. She's more pious than the Vatican these days.

Ok Bishop Ladaria. Please educate us, the flock. What other matters are as grave as the instant killing of an innocent human being? I would say concentration camps, Dictators that cause massive suffering like in Chy-nah and NK, and giving money to a medical facility so they can create viruses that can cause the deaths of millions around the world (Fauci gave money to the Wuhan lab that released the Wuhan flu throughout the world).
Other than that, I doubt there is much else in the US that compares to the instant killing of an innocent human. Any politician that supports laws that make it legal to kill an innocent human is on the level of these anti-christ dictators because such laws allow the killing of millions of innocent humans, not jut one. They are killed one at a time.

This is how you know when a church has lost its way.

If I were catholic I would be asking for a huge expunging of leadership. No men of God are residing at the Vatican.

When they go from “abortion = murder” to “it’s not that big of a deal” in a matter of years how are we supposed to believe anything else they say.

Looks like we are on our own now

Memorandum by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, July 2004 | Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion: General Principles

....Presenting oneself to receive Holy Communion should be a conscious decision, based on a reasoned judgment regarding one's worthiness to do so, according to the Church's objective criteria, asking such questions as: “Am I in full communion with the Catholic Church? Am I guilty of grave sin?”

....The Church teaches that abortion or euthanasia is a grave sin. The Encyclical Letter Evangelium Vitae, with reference to judicial decisions or civil laws that authorize or promote abortion or euthanasia, states that there is a “grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection.”

....In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law or vote for it.

....Christians have a “grave obligation” of conscience not to cooperate formally in practices which, even if permitted by civil legislation, are contrary to God’s law. Indeed, from the moral standpoint, it is never licit to cooperate formally in evil.

....This cooperation can never be justified either by invoking respect for the freedom of others or by appealing to the fact that civil law permits it or requires it.

Not being a Catholic, it’s still interesting to see how the Vatican can maneuver through there own mine field. The Pope won’t endorse same sex marriage, yet they are cool with abortion?

That’s a bold move Cotton, let’s see how this plays out.

I'm not going to take the side of the Vatican on this one, because I do disagree, however, it is more nuanced than people want it to be.

There is a difference between supporting choices, including the choice to sin - which is what free will requires, and actually sinning. If Biden et al were proven to have committed/decided on an actual abortion within their own control, they would be denied - as they should be.

The question for the Vatican is, do we put politicians on a higher pedestal that their opinion is more relevant than someone else's, does it have more weight and are they more responsible for allowing this choice?

Anyone raising issue here, Catholic or not, needs to look at this on a scale related to contraception. Most people would believe that contraception is not "as bad," that someone who supports allowing contraception isn't necessarily sinning, even if they don't use contraception.

Look, the current Vatican is problematic, but it is human. It's still The Church, and there is a thread where this kind of decision can be relatively defended, even if morally any good Catholic would believe this is the wrong choice.

Being Catholic right now would be downright embarrassing with this progressive charlatan as pope. What a complete whiff by the elective body of bishops/cardinals

There isn’t enough room to list all of their false doctrines, so it should surprise no one.

This pope and the current church hierarchy are in league with Satan. I have been a Catholic all my life. I didn’t leave the church......it left me.

I know the priest who denied Biden communion when he was campaigning in South Carolina in 2019. He said that after he did it, his church received a lot of money in donations from around the country, but their staff was also harassed daily by phone, e-mail, and in-person for several weeks after.

If the priests want to defy the Vatican and deny a pro-choice politician the Eucharist due to their own belief in church doctrine, they should be able to do so. The Bishops aren’t the ones saying a majority of Masses around the world anyway.
