So, dilemma with a woman

Go to one of my buddy's kid's HS graduation crawfish boil Saturday. I've known him casually for a few years, but last 6 months or so we've been hanging out more as he started playing guitar so I've been giving him some lessons and he's been coming to our weekly jam session.
Tall pretty blonde, straight up my type, is there. (I know the rules but no pics). No ring on her finger, so I start chatting her up. We hit if off, lots of positive body language, yada yada.
Ask him later who she was, he says "My ex-wife". It hits like a record scratch and freeze frame in a movie: I realize then that I've heard her name before, just had not met her as she runs in a different social group.
She seems to be relationship material. Smart, funny, confident, makes a good living. Damn good looking. Is this a Guy Code thing, do I talk to him before pursuing her, or what?
