Watch Elon Musk in 2014, in 2021 he looks like an idiot.

And I say this as a big Musk fan. Yes we will run out of hydrocarbons one day. Just like we will run out of lithium, rare earth metals, etc.

He states here unequivocally that hydrocarbons will become harder and harder to find and the prohibitively expensive to extract.

What happened since then was not only not close to what he claimed, but the opposite.

Not before we find a legitimate alternative

Hydrogen fuel cells, real fusion, small economical fission or whatever

Musk is brilliant man, but why would anyone listen to him on a subject he is clearly ignorant on.

Did he put a timeline on it?

Just watched the video and he's talking about at the end of the century

Seems a bit premature to say he's wrong no?

You're rendering his comment factually incorrect based on an arbitrarily imposed timescale of 7 years?

On larger scales, he's right. Any plot will have subtle vicissitudes that, if magnified and isolated, will reveal patterns that aren't congruous with the greater overall trend.

If I Were A Rich Man Lyrics
Fiddler On The Roof

"The most important men in town would come to fawn on me!
They would ask me to advise them,
Like a Solomon the Wise.
"If you please, Reb Tevye..."
"Pardon me, Reb Tevye..."
Posing problems that would cross a rabbi's eyes!
And it won't make one bit of difference if i answer right or wrong.
When you're rich, they think you really know!"

We will run out of lithium and rare earth metals long before hydrocarbons, most are controlled by the chicoms anyway.

Musk timeline that he thinks in is not the investment cycle of stocks. He is 10-20 yrs ahead of current time, and to be honest everything he is working on has an end goal to reach Mars. Of course he wants his products/businesses to be financially successful. Shocking to hear a business owner talk up his products.

Now, to his premise that we will run out of hydrocarbons soon (I don’t think he gave a timeframe, except that we will be a fully renewable driven society by the 2100) is a little more far fetched. There is plenty of resource, but government regulations and stipulations are removing them from being developed is having a greater impact.

Stop listening to what he says, start looking at why he says what he says.

Eventually it will become a resource that isn't as sought after though. At least not for energy needs. We will definitely have a huge renewable market by the 2030s. In 5 years solar will be more prominent than coal.
