Any of you have kids (or you) into Pokemon? Shortages, high demand...

We are in birthday season in this household, and the kids all love Pokemon, but the damn cards have been nearly impossible to find, so I'll pick some up if I come across them and thrown them in a box so we have them.
I was at Walmart this morning, and they had just stocked up on the big $40 boxes, $20, $15, $10 and the $4 packs. I picked up some and thought it was enough, but later I decided I should probably get some more while I could. I went back at lunch, not 3 hours later, and they were completely sold out of what was easily $2000+ in Pokemon cards.
It's absurd. What the heck is going on? Meanwhile, baseball cards sit on that aisle collecting dust...

A microcosm of what America has become. A bunch of limp wristed, Pokémon chasing, sissy boys who think they’re owed something.

Much like anything else printed on a card, people are paying astronomical prices for them right now.

Weird reply.

It's probably related to the supply chain and shipping issues. Pokemon cards are probably made in Asia.

It is the same reason certain Targets across the country have started selling cards only for a couple hours on a given weekday. They have signs posted at the displays. People have lost their minds over cards. I feel for anyone buying for longterm investment right now. The money is in flipping.

Have a friend who sells them and makes good money. I think it’s stupid but whatever don’t hate player game etc.
My real question is what kind of idiot is paying thousands for these worthless pieces of paper? Flipping is where it’s at but who is the end buyer?

Been like that for months with all trading cards. People got into pack breaks during covid, and it went crazy from there.

I’ll tell ya what’s fricking weird... Pokémon cards being more popular than baseball cards.
That’s fricking weird. It is what it is, though.

Our kids are elementary school age, so not much flipping. I had no idea that I should just load up the cart, but I think my wife would divorce me if I showed up with $2000 worth of Pokemon, claiming it was an investment...

They aren't. The premium baseball cards sell out just as fast. Right now you are in the part of the year when base sets are coming out. When stuff like Topps Chrome starts hitting shelves it will sell out as soon as it gets on shelves.

Really wish I hadn't let my little cousins crinkle mine all up long ago. Those damn charizards would be worth something

One of my friends is the second largest dealer in WNC. He doesn’t care anything about the cards really beyond the temporary nostalgia, but he’ll spend $4000 buying everything in stock to flip. The worst cards are still selling for $20 a piece.

Yep. Pokemon wasn't my era.
I had a freaking ton of baseball cards as a kid, I sold them for about $20 a few years ago. Collectors weren't interested at all, some guy bought them to make furniture. I kept a few dozen, hoping one day my grandkids can sell them, but I doubt it. They printed too many damn cards...

Yeah my son is kinda info pokemon. Last year he was really into the cards and then backed off but a few weeks ago we looked and couldn't find any.
My tip from last year was I just went on ebay and searched for lots of the holo cards or full arts or whatever. I'm sure they were knockoffs but he can't tell and his friends don't actually play the card game just collect the cards.

Yeah, but that $20 card is worth next-to-nothing unless it is graded, and grading costs more than that now......plus you have to wait months to get them back unless you want to pay out the arse for it.
Some guys are spending 2 or 3 grand, at least, on grading cards, and they will do that a few times a year. Hell, PSA, the largest and most trusted grading company, has suspended new grading right now. They were so far behind that it will take them months to just catch up to what they have on hand, not counting what people would keep sending.
The hobby is insane right now. And very, very volatile.

And for as crazy as baseball, football, and Pokemon cards are......basketball cards are so far beyond the realm of sanity and reason that no one can make sense of it. New, old, doesn't matter.

At least with Pokémon cards the kids can play a game. Baseball cards are dumb as hell.

Tell me you don't have tiktok, without telling me you don't have tiktok
Download it if you are into Pokémon cards and sports cards. It's cool to see unwrapping and rare cards. I follow quite a few card ppl.

I'm upping the value on these things. We keep packs for bribes, you "used to" be able to buy packs at Dollar Tree, and they made great chore bribes, rewards, etc. I am thinking now it's wash the truck, clean the garage....
