Update pg. 2: Federal Tax refund still pending

Has anyone else been waiting over 8 weeks for their refund?
My wife and I file separately. Her return was submitted and accepted on Feb 23. We are still waiting for this refund. The amount she owed to the state has been deducted.
I owed on both Federal and State filings, but had to wait until March 20 to file due to new forms needed. Both debits have been taken from my account.
The IRS website is worthless (no surprise).

I’ve had more clients call me this year than ever before that it’s been over a month and they still haven’t received their refund.
Oddly enough I seem to remember they’ve all filed around the same time as you.
In the meantime I have returns I filed last week and they’ve already gotten their refunds.

Interesting, thanks for the insight.

I got a fed refund within a couple weeks after filing in mid to late March.
State (Louisiana) refund is yet to be seen, but it's only been a month. State has been horribly slow to refund me in recent years.

I E-filed around 6 weeks ago (married filing jointly). I got my state return Monday and my federal is still pending.

I filed jointly on 3/17 and was accepted on 3/18 and I'm still pending. At least I'm not the only one.

My Federal is still pending last I checked and I submitted around the same time. No state here in TX.

I'm curious, what situation makes filing separate more advantageous.

Did she get a recovery rebate (i.e. she's now claiming stimulus money she hasn't previously received).
I can't confirm this, but it seems like when the recovery rebate is claimed, a quick check is done to see if it makes sense based on what the IRS in their records. If it does, rock on. If it doesn't, it's getting pulled for manual review. This is taking time to occur - I've seen 6 weeks.

That's our situation. We ended up with a large loss (fortunately on paper) last year and it greatly reduced my AGI to the point that we now qualify for stimulus. When we filed it was indicated that because of the stimulus we'd have to have a review for approval.

I had issues with my refund going into my bank on feb25th. I JUST received a letter date April 12 saying that my refund would be mailed in four weeks. I am livid, but what can you do.

Nope, waiting to file on 5/17 or extend. Some fricks need to get some K-1's and other docs to me.

I’m not getting a refund, but this is the first time I remember the money that I owed not coming out of my account immediately when I filed. It took them a bit over a week to withdraw it.

Income based repayment student loans.
It also really helps with the Covid credits.

Yeah I thought it might be that.

Filed 02/28 and still waiting. I think the manual review is definitely happening. In our case, my wife got her 1st stimulus before we were married, then we canceled that bank account and the money never arrived for her second, so I claimed it while filing. On top of that, last year she had 6 months with no income, so our combined 2020 AGI (1st time filing together) was quite low. This actually brought us down to a level that we can both collect the third stimulus, which I’m sure they are reviewing too and deciding if we qualify based on the timing of my filing.
It is an absolute shite show.

Filed and accepted on 2/18. Still waiting.

Yeah, normally I wouldn't be miffed about it but because of the large business write off they're holding up a LOT of money for us.

USA Today is on it.
Where's my tax refund? Americans face delays as IRS holds nearly 30M tax returns for manual processing
quote:
Typically, the IRS sends most refunds within 21 days or less of taxpayers filing their return. But for some early filers, the wait for a tax refund has been six weeks to eight weeks already.
***
Why? The $900 billion stimulus package signed into law in December, known as the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, didn’t leave the agency enough time to prepare for some of the tax code changes before the delayed filing season began Feb. 12.
***
Any corrections to the Recovery Rebate Credit or verification of the 2019 “look back” election are being manually processed by the IRS’s Error Resolution System. The IRS is placing those returns in “suspense” until an IRS employee can review them to verify their 2019 income or their prior Economic Impact Payment. The return is essentially in a queue waiting to be reviewed and processed.
