How big do they get if they aren’t sonically pulverized before passing through the urethra?

Hell, now I’m curious.

The weather is warming up. I’m going to work outside in the heat a lot, eat a lot of red meat, drink a lot of tea, milk, and coffee, and put extra salt on my popcorn.

I gotta see what this is about.

Had my first one last year. Had some back pain and nauseous feeling all day, but not as bad as some typical back pain I’ve dealt with for years. However, a big storm was coming so I figured I’d better get to the ER that night just to be safe. MRI showed it was already pretty much to my bladder so they sent me home with Toradol and a funnel. I was dreading passing it. The next day I go to pee in the funnel and I say to myself, “Wouldn’t it be great if this thing just plopped out right now?” Literally the first squirt, I hear something hit the funnel. It was a 3mm stone. Didn’t even feel it. The bad part is that the ER doc also told me I have a 4mm stone still in my kidney, and due to its position it is likely to dislodge also. I would rather have not known and have it hit me by surprise than have to think about it every day of my life.

I have a 12mm stone in my right kidney. It is in the lower lobe. Thankfully, it is staying put.

I've had a few. It isn't passing them that hurts so much. It is when they aren't moving as they leave the kidney. The 10 out of 10 pain comes when they get lodged in a ureter as they leave the kidney and cause a backup. Worst pain I've ever experienced.

Good god. According to Wikipedia, 5 mm is all that is needed to block the ureter. That’s a little terrifying to have that time bomb waiting to go off.

Yes they do. They suck. Over a two year period, I had 52 stones. I had three lithotripsy procedures, and one that they had to go and get one (you don't want to know). Most passed with a lot of pain killers. It's painful when it goes from your kidney to the bladder, but after that you don't feel it as much. Sometimes it was a bad backache to the "someone is standing on my testicles" pain. I finally was prescribed Alpurinol (to much uric acid in my system) and they stopped.

My Pops had one, and only one, before I was born. He and my mom were already married at the time and she took him to the ER. He was rolling on the waiting room floor and my Mom said to him, "Get up! You're embarrassing me." He had words for her.

They got him back to an exam room and he couldn't stay in the bed. He was back in the floor. ER doc walked in and said, "Yep....kidney stones."

This is a man who would have a heart attack years later when I was a senior in high school and when asked by the nurse his pain level on a scale of 1-10 he would say, "Maaayyybeee a 3, could be a 4."

I thought I was having a heart attack the first time I had one until it was suggested to me that it was a kidney stone. Had a 40-minute drive to the hospital where we had to stop at every 10 minutes so I could go heave. It passed shortly before I arrived at the hospital and then I learned about the one in my right kidney.
