Theoretically, it is within our ability to deflect an asteroid the size of the K-T impactor with nuclear explosions until it is off its collision course. The problem is that these rocks are small in the grand scheme of things, and as BBT says in Armageddon “It’s a big arse sky.” We would never be able to send a deflection mission to the asteroid in enough time. There’s also no way to stop a Texas size asteroid like in Armageddon. You would need a bomb 100,000 more powerful than the Tsar Bomba to affect an object that size.
The problem is that these large meteors come from the Taurid meteor stream that comes from a sun-facing direction I believe, and we have difficulty detecting them in a timely manner.
There is mounting evidence that a civilization-ending impact occurred only approx 12,000 years ago. That we do not dedicate more of our resources towards detection and interdiction is crazy to me.

Not really. How do you stop 5 square mile rock traveling at 47,000 mph with only a week’s notice.?

On the serious side if we detect the the object in enough time we can alter its’ trajectory with several methods such as nukes, lasers, and gravity tugs. But the key phrase here is “enough time”. We also need leadership who takes these things seriously, not like this Jen Psaki bitch cow. Also the sneaky basterds Comets. They are large and travel super fast, not much of a warning. On another serious note we had that historic flood of 2016 here in the Baton Rouge area. The mayorette still has NOT implemented any improvements in the drainage except for a COMPUTER program that identifies problem drainage area. What an underwhelming female.

Yes. They will hire some renegade oilfield workers and teach them to become astronauts in 2 weeks and let them drill on that asteroid, implant an a-bomb and boom! It's that easy

I watched something about this recently, the answer is no.
They didn't think current nuclear weapons would work, or solar sails, or lasers, rocket engines, or anything we have now would work on a world-ending sized asteroid.
And pay no attention that SpaceX is furiously trying to build the capability to leave this earth... lol.

Hope and pray that somewhere, that a Clark Kent type being is chilling on earth in hiding. And he will use this event to make his grand entrance to the planet.
