dumb question that may have been posted to sorry...

were all people on board wearing a PFD?? That should be the law on these vessels i thought.

edit, from a pic on wgno site, one passenger being pulled aboard the coast guard vessel was not wearing a pfd

They have alarms that sound when the vessel starts to list from a punch through.

Yes, but if they were in their bunks, which they shouldn't have been if the legs were going down, they probably wouldn't have time to get out. Damn I hate this.

I think there was a CG boat that was on sea trials for Bollinger.

That line blew up quite suddenly and had some weird circulation, a large bow in center tracking different from the rest of the storm.

Punchthrough occurs when the near seafloor soil temporarily supports the weight of the legs and structure. The near seafloor soils are sometimes stronger than the underlying soils, such as a thin dense sand layer over a soft clay layer. If a leg loading exceeds the capacity of the upper stronger layer, the leg "punches through", and uncontrolled leg runs can occur.

The legs weren't jacking down. The vessel was underway.

Dumbest thing you can do is wear a PFD inside the vessel. What do you think happens if the inside floods? You might not be able to get out because you are stuck floating.

In a lift boat every bunk has a PFD near it. You grab it and GO outside. But I guarantee if this thing flipped quick, there was no grabbing a PFD. You would have been against another wall in seconds.

The hull is under water which means you can't open doors or windows due to the pressure outside of them. You are essentially fricked.

I gotcha. Can't imagine the feeling he had when the situation turned severe.

Also, imagine the room you’re sitting in Turing 90deg and the lights going out seconds later. Then having to navigate stairs to get to an exit.

Nightmare fuel.

Once that barge digs and the waves start crashing over the freeboard, those 250’ legs start acting as sails and BAM, you flip over at the blink of an eye

Obviously the weather turned bad quick but is there ever a “fasten your seatbelt” type announcement that might give them some types of heads up?

There’s a general alarm but I doubt he had time to pull it. Especially if he was thrown to the other side of the wheelhouse.

It got stronger as it moved south but it didn't come out of nowhere. There were marine warnings on Lake Pontchartrain at 12:30 pm and the line was heading south.

Here is a shot of the Seacor Power months ago on site at an oil and gas platform, submitted by a viewer.

The search continues for 12 missing crewmembers. Six were rescued alive and officials say the body of another crewmember was recovered.

Coast Guard has recovered one body. Damn. Prayers to the victim’s family and friends.

Is there any chance/hope that the missing are alive and just stuck inside? Is this even possible?

Awful.
