Max has the poise to make a play in crucial downs at the end of games.
He threw a 4 yard route on 3rd and 10 against Florida.
We got lucky they threw a shoe.
And all that set up a BOMB of a FG. It not like he drove the length the field to set up a chip shot. We went 37 yard with a 15 yard penalty.
Max’s Stats with the game in the line
2/3 for 3 yards. 2 runs for 9 yards.
I like the kid, but the some people are really overrating the “it” factor.

For what it’s worth, his reads and release are about 2/10 of a second slower than Joe Burrow.
Is that comparison to 2018 or 2019 Joe Burrow?

Soon as the other qb family starts hollering racism he will be starting this season!

In game one he was terrible with holding on to the ball combined with not a quick enough release to make up for it. But he got noticeably better by game three. Pocket awareness went from a 1 out of 10 to like a 5 out of 10 in just three games. Probably speaks more to how bad it was than how good it got but to see improvement was encouraging for the rest of the year.
He’s got a lot to get better at e.g., holding on too long, pocket awareness, movement, etc., but we are spoiled by J Burrow.
If Burrow never happened (God forbid) can you imagine what we’d have been saying if Brennan last year was the first QB we’d have seen after the Less years, throwing for over 1100 yds and 11 TDs in three games!?
We would have been ecstatic. But we’ve seen the best there ever was and now we forgot how to act.

In all fairness, TJ Finley is not an SEC QB. I am tired of hearing about his arm strength. Brandon Harris had a strong arm but was a terrible QB.
He would be if he played South Carolina every week.

In all fairness, Finley is the only one who actually faced good defenses
He had to play Arkansas, Alabama, and A&M
Brennan started against Miss State, Vandy and Missouri
Johnson against Florida and Ole Miss. Ole
Miss was maybe the worst defense in the country last year and Boutte went the frick offZ

Florida had the 74th ranked defense in the country and gave up 31ppg plus we scored 2 of the TDs on defense. Using the Florida game as this unquestionable decider and excuse to ignore the fact that Brennan put up better numbers is total subjective bias. I love Max Jets and if he wins the job in the offseason I’m behind him 100% but he wasn’t the better QB this past year.

Max played well but not amazing against Florida.
He had 3 TDS but also dunked and dunked most of the game. He had 3 passing yards on our final drive.
And the Ole Miss game was 70%
Boutte going through frick off.
He’s probably better than Finley, but Finley also got fed to the wolves behind a shitty OL.

You’re right we did dink and dunk a lot but remember that visibility was low because of the fog in that game and early on we pushed it more. I think he played well vs Florida but again that was a terrible defense. I also think there’s no comparison between he and Finley right now. At least with Max you can run the offense and it wasn’t so constricted the way it was with Finley. Finley has talent but it’s just gonna take a little longer with him. Remember Finley is coming from a very antiquated system in HS so he’s got that much more catching up to do when it comes to playing the modern position and all the things that entails.

quote:Nope, not how it works. We'll get destroyed by the best teams if our QB is just a game manager. Whoever we start will need to ball out.
That's all it takes in college as well. Not throwing int's and converting on third down will take you far in the game of football.

For the downvoters who don’t agree with my “pick 6” comment about TJ Finley. Click the link.
quote:This is even more nonsense. Harris didn't have a QB coach nor offense worth a flip. Finley actually has both which means he can improve. If you read up on him, he only recently really started learning the QB position a couple years back. You know why Johnson is better now, it's because he has been taught how to be a QB since birth.

I'm of the belief that Finley has the most upside of any QB currently on the roster and that includes Nuss. What he needs to do is keep at it and don't listen to stupid people like you. IMO it will likely be Brennan and then Johnson as those are the two best options right now, but who knows about next year or the year after. What Finley needs most is knowledge of the position. It's great that he has coaches that have taught both college and the NFL. If you didn't know, Peetz was an offensive analyst for the QBs at Bama and helped Blake Sims become the all time single season leader in total yards and TDs at Bama in 2013. He was also an offensive assistant and QB coach on the Raiders and helped young Derek Carr to his best years. Maybe Finley could be Peetz's project.

quote:I didn't want to say this because I didn't want to start shite as a QB war, but this is 100% true. Nobody wants to talk about that though. Johnson played the worst defenses we played all year and did pretty good, but how much do you have to do when Boutte is running all over everybody? Florida's defense wasnt much better than South Carolina's and Ole Miss was even worse than that. Finley actually had one of the top 3 games against South Carolina last year despite throwing it only 21 times. Had he thrown it 30 times, you're probably looking at 360 pass yards and 4 TDs. Johnson's game vs UF wasn't even in the top 5 games QBs had vs them. It's why I haven't jumped on the Max Johnson bandwagon. I don't dislike any of the QBs, and I'm not crowning any of the QBs either.

I still believe Brennan should start until he plays really bad. Last year I saw a QB that improved every week in Brennan. It's like people completely forget where Burrow was for the vast majority of his first year in 2018. Burrow looked awful until the last few games. I actually go back to watch Brennan's 3 games, but I can't bother to watch most of Burrow's 2018 games.

Give me the stats of a game manager vs an elite qb.

Yall do know that is not the only pass they threw yesterday, and that yesterday is not the only day they will throw a pass or passes, don't you?

no not at all. College teams win it all w elite QB play. Burrow, Jones, Lawrence. And on and on.
Were Coker and Hurts elite ? It's only recently that Bama has been signing qb's like Tua. Even still, Hurts had to bail out Bama in place of Tua and vice versa. Was Fromm elite ? Very good, but elite ? Fromm would have a natty if he didn't play for one of the dumbest big game coaches in the SEC. Watson was elite, who on the roster has Watson skills ?

Max played behind the same o line. Now do negative plays of Finley vs Max. Max had very few. Finley had back breaking negative plays. Finley can't do what Max can do via his legs and in today's game that matters. Even Clemson installed run plays for Lawrence because he can haul it.
