Spending a week there with the wife this year. What are the can't miss things to do and see here? All we have planned is a day in Yellowstone to see Old Faithful, etc. I'd like to take a trip down the Snake River for fishing. Plan on running a half marathon while there one morning.

There are much more beautiful things to see in Yellowstone.

You have a week total? As in 5 full days?

I'd do Grand Tetons 1 day, possibly 2, depending on how much you like to hike

then for Yellowstone, basically just do the southern loop 1 day and the northern loop the next day

now if you have 5 days and really like to hike, you could extend all of this

and like the other poster stated, Old Faithful is the most anticlimactic thing in the world

if you want to do it just to say you did it, fine, but if you really don't care, its not a must see

There's lots of stuff to see and do in Yellowstone but you're going to need more than one day and you should try to find a place to spend one night in the park.

If you are just doing a day trip from Jackson Hole, I would stick to the southern part of the park.

I'd much rather see the Yellowstone Grand Canyon, Upper and Lower Falls, and the Yellowstone Lake area. I love seeing the herds of bison and other wildlife over seeing the geyser.

yellowstone national park is probably the most visually stunning and unique natural place i have ever seen in my life. i think that most people would agree that it is certainly one of the natural wonders of the world.

you will be 1.5 hrs from the south entrance of that. do with that information what you will, but one day in YS is not ideal in my opinion

Eh I mean I think its pretty incredible that Ole Faithful is so predictable. Its also pretty damn big. I'm not sure what people expect? Its not a NYC July 4th Fireworks show.

Is it the best thing there? No, but worth seeing for sure.

Yes, it definitely is. It's just the actual "event" of it really isn't that exciting.

I presume this is you first trip to YS. We went for the 1st time in 2019 and you can read about it but nothing beats first hand knowledge.

As someone else said the road is like an 8 with entrance/exits road connecting to the 8. It will be a long day from Jackson but you can see a lot just by driving the bottom half of the 8.

The road from Jackson connects with the 8 at West Thumb; if you want to go to OF first then go clockwise.

These are places on that loop.
- Kepler Cascades: short walk to an overlook of the river

- Old Faithful area: there is a lot more to this area than just OF. It is a basin of geysers. Had no idea until we went there. The entire area is very cool IMO and probably the only place like it in the US and maybe the world. The problem here is you will spend a lot of time waiting for the geysers but you can look up the expected eruption time on line.

- Grand Prismatic Spring: we did not go there, big mistake but it was getting late and crowded. Next time.

- Firehole Lake Drive: not a must do but a loop road that goes past some old geysers, etc.
- Firehole Canyon Road: road along the river with scenic views and a swimming area. It's one way, north to south, so you will past the exit and make a loop to get back on the mail road. Then go north again.

- go east at Madison campground area and then east again at Norris Canyon Road, that takes you to the Canyon area.
- Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone - must do. There is a north and south side, an upper and lower falls. You do not have to walk far to see the views.

- Drive south through Hayden Valley to Lake Yellowstone. We stayed at the lodge there and they have a nice lounge area with views of the lake. They usually have some type of live music. You need a reservation if you plan to eat there but the food is not that good, but it is probably the best in the park.
- Drive south to West Thumb and then exit to Jackson.

Rather than post a bunch of pictures I'll post this Google photos album of YS.

Thanks for all the details. We're going at the end of May. Planning to cover everything you referenced & up to Mammoth Hot Springs as well.

How long did it take you to do everything you mentioned? Just trying to maximize the time we have allotted in Yellowstone.

Road thru Paradise Valley towards the Roosevelt Gate is a great drive. Plus i read that like 60% of the animals congregate on the north east side of the park which is essentially the road from mammoth hot springs to Cooke city. We saw one wolf but plenty of other animals during winter. I imagine summer would be even a better view.

We were there three nights. If you are staying at one of the lodges on the bottom loop (OF, YS lake or at the Canyon) you could see all those places in a day. But you really need more time than that because of low speed limits and stopping to look at animals. And the bison just walk down or stop in the road - you don’t move until they do.
And we missed a few places, and we only walked around a portion of the geyser basin at OF. But we did wait a couple of hours for one of the geysers to go off.

FYI, I’ve read that the road from Canyon to Tower Junction, where you turn toward the NE entrance & Lamar Valley, is closed this year. That makes getting to Lamar Valley more difficult; LV is one of the best places to see wildlife. It also means you cannot complete the north loop; you have to backtrack.

I live in Jackson.

I like Grand Teton better then Yellowstone. But I like mountains, and I like hiking. Certainly see both, but I would spend more time in GTNP.

The drive through Paradise Valley is truly special.

Where exactly is this?

I plan on running some while I'm there. We are staying in a VRBO up in The Cove which is just north of Wilson. Current plan was to just run the Pathways route from the condo to Jackson crossing the Snake River. If there are some additions routes you'd recommend, I'd love to hear them. I'm a road runner guy btw. Every time I've gotten on trails, I've busted my arse!

Once you get a taste of it, you'll spend half your life, thinking of a way to live it. I haven't been able to get Paradise Valley out of my head for the last 30 years.

Paradise Valley connects to Gardiner, and the North entrance to the park. It has these sweeping views that truly are special.

The only reason to use it though, would be if you’re driving down from Bozeman. The other entrance worth mentioning, is the North East entrance, which cuts through the Beartooths. But there’s no practical reason to drive it though.

It’s a beautiful drive though.

Yeah. We will be coming up from Jackson to get to the park.
