We are backpacking in New Mexico soon and can't seem to find our bear cannister. Should I just be able to ziploc food, put it in a sack, and throw it over a tree limb??

Thats what we do in Colorado. I think it some places that are popular the bears have gotten really good at getting hang bags out of trees, so you may want to be a little particular with your tree picking.

Just bring a dry bag and hang it in a tree

Wise man told me when it comes to something chasing you
You don’t have to be first, just don’t be last

Sleep inside a YETI Cooler as they’re bear proof.

I tell Ole Miss fans here in Alaska that the best thing to do to keep mosquitos away is to open up a can of canned salmon and rub the juice all over them.
A dry bag will work fine. I did hang my bags when on the A.T. Here we all have bear canisters we use. Make some noise, especially if you are walking up on a thicket or somewhere that looks like an area where a bear could be bedded down.

AWAY from your campsite. At least 50 years, preferably more.
Black bears will still climb the tree to get it.

Did a backpack trek in NM several years ago and our guide would not allow any candy, chewing gum, snacks, protein bars, or flavored drinks etc. while walking the trail. Said the bears could smell it and come looking for the source.

If you are in cell phone range, are you near a place that could sell you another canister?

Do whatever you can to avoid attracting a bear. The worst thing about bears is that they don't kill you before starting to eat you.

Google Cliff Jacobson.
