my thoughts? that we should call fat people fat and we shouldn't accept it as healthy
the problem is that a lot of people who are 30 lbs overweight, don't think they are fat because they are not 100 lbs overweight
when they see articles about American beings fat, they immediately think of those obese slobs, but don't realize that the vast majority of those overweight Americans fit in the 20-30 lbs overweight range
but these same people get mad and lose their minds about the fat acceptance magazine covers but don't realize that they themselves have accepted their own fatness
this is evident every time BMI is discussed on this board

the level of obsession concerning other people weight on these forums is borderline disturbing. if you are a chubby chaser but don't hide behind a moral high horse - especially if your into chubby guys

The problem with BMI is that it was created in the 19th century, when people did a lot more walking and moving around because there were no cars. Also, people back then ate to survive and barely ate anything at that. So of course a person 5'9 would weight 130 pounds. Because that was completely indicative of the way they lived their lives.
I'm willing to bet that 100% of the people calling others "fatty" are obese/overweight (according to the BMI) in this thread. Especially guys over 30 who live in Louisiana. Come on...

Ill give you mine.
The ot likes to point to NFL RBs or WR or Safeties, yet only 9% of US adults perform ANY kind of resistance training. I have been to gyms, maybe and I mean maybe 25% train with any consistency and intensity to build any appreciable amount of muscle. So we have a BMI which works for 97%+ of the population, yet have guys getting on here every time, like you, claiming it is antiquated. That is fat acceptance.
We have guys getting on here that are 6'1 205 claiming they would look like a skeleton if they got to 195. Yet even if they were a natural bodybuilder, that had maxed out their potential for building lean muscle....they would still be between 15-20% bf at the weight the BMI states....that is fat acceptance.
2 weeks ago we had an OTer that said he was 6' 250+ and was shocked to find out he qualified for the shot...because he was obese. Said it was bullshite because obese is his neighbor who is 6' 350+ lbs. That is fat acceptance.
fat acceptance isnt the extreme morbidly obese, its the guy that is 20-40 lbs overweight that hasnt lifted weights in 20+ years that claims he would look like a skeleton if he followed BMI.....that is the biggest part of fat acceptance.

This is spot on. The overton window of fatness has shifted so far that people will ask you if you're sick when you healthily lose 15lbs because they themselves are conditioned to see fat as normal.

quote:Exactly what I'm talking about. No middle age guy who lives in Louisiana and eats and drinks the way we do is not going to be overweight (according to BMI). That's my point. The BMI is based on a lifestyle from the 19th century. We move around completely differently, eat differently, everything about our daily life is different.
I'm 5'7 148lbs and i could stand to lose a little belly fat
I'm not saying make it to where a person 5'9" weighing 300 pounds is healthy. I'm saying the numbers need to be shifted a bit from where they are now.

5'7" 148 is normal according to BMI

I wont lie - I was 305 in October, and as of a week ago I was down to 223. i look in the mirror, and still have some weight to get rid of - especially in the mid section, but my shoulders and upper body looks sickly - i know the Gym im about to join next week will help that, but i feel like i look borderline sick and frail from the stomach up LOL.
it is just my own perception cause I have not been this low on weight since the late 90's, but it is hard to look in the mirror and question if i should look like that.

You can remove what's in parentheses.

And yes, I know it's "normal" according to BMI. But my point is that BMI itself is based on a 19th century lifestyle.
