you are struggling to keep up in here

I'm 6'2" 185, which is also normal weight according to BMI

But my point is that BMI itself is based on a 19th century lifestyle.

The problem with BMI is that it was created in the 19th century, when people did a lot more walking and moving around because there were no cars. Also, people back then ate to survive and barely ate anything at that. So of course a person 5'9 would weight 130 pounds. Because that was completely indicative of the way they lived their lives.

nobody is saying you have to be at the bottom of the BMI range. But 5'9 170 lbs is the top of the normal range. Even if you were a top level natural bodybuilder (99.5%+ of population is not) and you had maxed your FFMI, that would still put you in the 9-10% BF range for almost everyone. Is that a little low for what most people can maintain....absolutely. But we are talking a top level natural BB who has maxed his muscle potential out....very very rare.

Average guy who lifts easily twice weekly would prolly be about 15% bf at that weight if they worked really hard. 15% was considered average in the 70-80s.

That is fat acceptance.

I'm willing to bet that 100% of the people calling others "fatty" are obese/overweight (according to the BMI) in this thread. Especially guys over 30 who live in Louisiana. Come on...

you would be wrong, i can vouch for salmon. I make no bones that at 195lbs right now I am overweight and in the 18-20% bodyfat range. But i am working on it and can promise at 20% BF, I am thinner than 95% of the OT.

"OK?" So you think life today is completely on pace with how people ate and moved around in the 19th century? You think those numbers are all "like for like"? Because if you say yes, then I'm done with the conversation.

I'm trying to understand the relevance in regards to our health

do you think we have evolved to hold more unhealthy weight in the last 70 years?

If you inferred that me calling the BMI chart antiquated as fat acceptance, then wow..... big reach there pal.

I agree on all points in your diatribe. Was trying to figure out why you where going off on me thinking BMI is antiquated. I simply think you can just measure your waist and it is a much better indicator. Me and you are on the same page.

I didn't really "go off" on you, I just answered why BMI is still used

I don't think I brought up fat acceptance in my reply to you

wtf does this have to do with anything? FAT IS FAT, doesnt matter the century.

look if you are over 15%-20% bodyfat which is considered the high end of ideal for those under 60 (99% of posters here are) then you are overweight. Over 25% and you are obese. over 30% and you are morbidly obese.

guess what the average male BF% in the good ole USA is....28 fricking percent!!

That is fat no matter the century and consdered Poor by every metric, no matter the century.

Height: 6 feet, 2 inches

Weight: 208 pounds

Your BMI is 26.7, indicating your weight is in the Overweight category for adults of your height.

For your height, a normal weight range would be from 144 to 194 pounds.

6'-2" and 147 lbs was my weight in 11th grade when i got my drivers license. i was a freaking twig.....

granted i think i feel better at 198 (my pre-covid lockdown weight) but would rather be 208 then at my 194 high end target weight.

i got down to 192 after a stomach bug a few years back and felt emaciated

EDIT: from my scale this morning:

22.4% body fat
