Automakers, ever aware of their customer's needs, began optioning out trucks with all the cheap Chinese luxury of a knockoff Louis Vuitton and plenty of space in the back for the kids. This isn't a minivan vroom vroom Wanna hear about my towing capacity?

Not a single work truck that I have bought this decade has been an 8' bed and they were all single cabs except for one.

I bought my son a 1996 F150 Single Cab Short bed 4x4 with a manual transmission, because like you I didn't want him driving a lot of people around. I also wanted his hands to be to busy to be on his phone, and I didn't want him to let his friends drive it "figured the stick would solve this problem".
yessir. my son isn't even two yet but i've got this ol beater single cab 4wd tacoma standard transmission that i plan on putting him in for his first truck. it runs great right now, but i plan on restoring the body and keeping it under cover and using it sparingly to keep it running good. there's no doubt in my mind it'll last another 20k miles/ 15 years until he's ready to try his hand at driving, even in

in that truck he can't go too fast, can't haul around a pile of buddies and can't totally disregard the road due to the standard transmission. out the 4 vehicles i own, 2 are standard, and at one time even my wife's car was a standard. i bought a new dodge 3500 cab and chassis this year with the hd aisin automatic transmission in it, and even though it stops 30,000 lbs better than my older rigs, the automatic transmission in trucks are still inferior when compared to an experienced operator towing an extremely heavy load with a standard transmission. there's no comparison, really.

a standard transmission makes you an actual operator of the machine instead of a being a "driver" of the machine. a standard shift transmission makes you a better, more aware driver by default, and even though it becomes 2nd nature, it still takes skill and attentiveness - a good combination for a new, immature youngin' who's full of piss and vinegar.

meh, I've had a truck as my primary vehicle for almost 30 years, largely because I need one, don't give a shite what everyone else drives, if I decide I need or want a Scion or a Twizy I'll get one of those

I get that rational but he may just end up with a truck bed full of people. At least that what we did in high school.

If he’s anything like you he won’t have any friends to drive around.

The women around here all drive trucks baw. Insecure and fragile is worrying about other people's vehicles, who cares? Truth is a 4 door truck is just extremely versatile and offers more than a car or suv can for active people.

Guys like Les Miles wouldn't have a place to make out with the Co-eds. That center console in the front seat always gets in the way!!!

I love single bed trucks. I want a tundra 4wd or dodge 4wd single cab with the 5.7.

Still too rich for me. But i will own one in ghe next 2 years

My truck is a daily driver, and occasional kid/workgroup hauler.

I'd rather have one nice vehicle than buy a personnel carrier and a truck for when I need one.

I've started looking at single cab longbed Titan diesels in the last couple of days and find them to be a pretty good value. 2016s and 2017s, 4x4 with under 50k miles for around $27k. That's a lot of near-new truck and capability for that money.
