I watched that fight and was pulling for Smokin' Joe to take Ali's head off.
Ali had a lot of help from Joe to even get a license to fight and Joe helped him financially when he couldn't fight and then Ali does the whole "Uncle Tom, White Man's Champion, Ugly as a gorilla crap before the fight and that really hurt Frazier to have him do that.
He got his pound of flesh in that fight by beating Ali like he did, and I was glad to see it happen.

Ali was a scumbag. What he did to Frazier is all you need to know about him.

Sell the fight?

He never apogized to Frazier... Ever. He didn't feel bad at all. He essentially spit on Joe's generosity.
He wasn't "selling" anything. Ali was worse than the people he said he supposedly hated.

Frazier knew what Ali was doing to sell the fight.
We met Ali as kids in the early 80s at the airport. He signed every autograph, kissed my little sister on her cheek and then he was on our flight from L.A. to D.C.
He stood up in the galley for 5 hours during that flight entertaining a crowd of old drunk white guys telling stories about the Frazier fights.
Also took a plane years later and Foreman was on it. First class and he was wearing sweats and sunglasses and didn't talk to anybody despite his TV persona.
Ali gave the public what it wanted And he liked people and went out of his way to do it. Never seen an athlete so gracious.
Hard hats went for Frazier because of the draft dodging and Muslim thing with Ali. It was not about love for Frazier but just anti-Ali.
Once white people were all behind Frazier, black people overwhelmingly went to Ali's corner. There were greater politics and not about what Ali said about Frazier in press Conferences of which Frazier didn't deserve but he got his own fan base...mainstream America at the time.

This is what I remember the most as a little kid.
The politics of Vietnam served as a backdrop to the whole pre-fight build-up. I remember my dad getting in intense converations with draft eligible teenagers at the bar when kids were allowed in and the drinking age was 18.
It was the same before Ali-Quarry. Very generational in who wanted who to win.

Ali was a scumbag. Of course he was generous to the public because they worshipped the same god he did: Muhammed Ali.

I didn't like Ali when he was Cassius Clay and started running his big mouth at every opportunity when on TV or the radio.
I boxed amateur for a while as a teen and did appreciate his talent in the ring. For a big man, he had the slickest moves and very fast hands, but that mouth and attitude got under my skin.
Then his refusal to be inducted in the military when called upon really frosted my nuts. There was no way in hell he was going to the front lines or get close to seeing any action in Nam being the celebrity he was. At most he would have been boxing in the Army putting on shows for the troops and following Bob Hope around in USO tours.
And you're right Dawg, he surely did worship at the altar of Ali more than the one for Allah.

The Frazier ali documentary HBO did is one of the better sports documentaries.
I am way too young for this era of boxing but I loved watching these fight on ESPN classic.
I would love to read the takes if this board was around back then.

Ali gave Joe a payday for their 3rd match. There's a great story about how Joe was washed up and Ali gave Joe a shot at a payday.
In the first or second round, Joe was popping Ali and in a clinch Ali said to Frazier, "They told me you were washed up."
Joe responded: "They lied."
Enjoyed their fights. Different era. Great fights on Friday nights or Saturday afternoons.

Nobody liked Ali until he couldnt talk anymore. Thats when the media started saying he was the greatest and all that jazz. Frazier was every bit as good if not better.

Thanks for posting.
Man what a fight, it's been far too long since I have watched it.
2 great fighters...
11-4 Frazier was skewed, but the other 2 were about right.
Frazier definitely had 1 10-8 round with a possibly another.

Ali should have gone several times in the 15th round.
Frazier was raining knockout punches yet he survived.

I watched the replay on ESPN the other day. Frazier sure had a funky style with all that twitching. I bet he was frustrating as hell to fight. Ali seemed like the exact opposite. He was silky smooth. He looked like he was born to throw that jab. That thing was lightning quick. It’s not hard to see why he was such a star. He was as much of an entertainer as he was a boxer. I know basically nothing about boxing and that was the first time I’d seen extended footage of either boxer but it was pretty cool.

Eddie Futch was Joe's trainer and got him to go with that style. Futch also trained 3 other fighters that beat Ali in his career------Ken Norton, Trevor Berbick and Larry Holmes. He had Ali's number for sure.
Back in the late 50's and into the early 60's, Floyd Patterson used the same style(Peek-a-Boo) to win the heavyweight title and become the youngest man to do so at the time. He was trained by Cus D'Amato who also trained Mike Tyson who then became the youngest man to win the heavyweight title.

Ali upped it for the Thrilla. Joe didn’t deserve that crap and never got over it
