Supreme Court raises bar for some immigrants to avoid deportation

The Supreme Court on Thursday made it harder for longtime immigrants who have been convicted of a crime to avoid deportation.
Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the opinion for a 5-3 conservative majority that ruled against a Mexican citizen who entered the U.S. illegally and has lived in the country for 25 years.
The man, Clemente Avelino Pereida, had been charged in Nebraska with using a fraudulent Social Security card to get a job and convicted under a state law against criminal impersonation.
Not all criminal convictions inevitably lead to deportation, but Gorsuch wrote for the court that Pereida failed to prove he was not convicted of a serious crime.

Did Sotardmayor have a scathing dissent

And it matters not if the Feds have no intentions of enforcing the deportation law as written. Hell they've been ordered to ignore pretty much all of the laws as it is.

Breyer wrote the dissent for the liberals.

I know how everyone feels about the courts, but there is some indication that the courts are starting to see the threat of leftist totalitarianism for the country. It will probably take a while to gain momentum, but I am hopeful.

POTUS Trump did some great work in staffing courts at all levels, and we are beginning to see some of the payoff.

You know, except for when it actually mattered.

Liberal lockstep. Every. Single. Time. Why can’t conservatives and Republicans learn this?

Trying to figure out how to tell this story...so, I'm taking the deposition of an "injured" plaintiff. He is from Honduras. Guess what, came here by bus up through Mexico with his sister, her husband and 2 kids because it was unsafe in 2017. Can you say caravan... His brother followed shortly leaving his mother.
He had a US sponsor pay his way. Gets to Tijuana and applies for asylum. They ship him to Orlando where he did a little work for a lawn company but is now unemployed (he has gotten 2 covid checks) His brother gives him money for rent. He has a social security number and a drivers license but has not even had his final asylum hearing.
Is our country screwed up or what.

She was likely furious when she realized they said she was getting the dissent and not the dessert.

You have more faith than I do.

Border States need to sue US Gov't for not enforcing border laws. Texas should be first. They need to bring the receipts to SCOTUS and say the US Govt must pay these bills for allowing illegals to freeload off of the state.

Im surprised this has not been done, heck by all states, they all have illegals and the federal govt is in charge of immigration. They can show the cost, in a myriad of ways, from increased law enforcement, schools, medical, wear and tear on infrastructure, benefit claims, you name it.
Heck Im surprised Cali has not done it, declare sanctuary cities AND sue the fed govt to pay for it, thats how they roll.

I thought it was done in the Obama administration and failed.
