How many passes were the receivers catching every day in the summer of 19?

100 apiece or was it more? We had very few drops during the season and even though we're talking about 4 guys who play in the NFL catching the throws, I can't help but think all that work helped.
We've got 3 guys with game experience and a frosh who knows what it takes to be successful from his dad. With Boutte, Moore, the 2 Seniors, a highly rated recruit who is already on campus, and Taylor (at least) to catch the passes there is no way that shouldn't happen again!

It was the “Summer of 10,000 Catches.”
For those that missed it before the 2019 season, this is an incredible read:

That's what I was talking about.

This is an overused theme. The receivers in 2019 were not good because they caught a million jugs passes; they were good because their names were Chase, Jefferson and Marshall.
Of course it's a good idea to practice catching balls. This is not an idea invented in 2019 by Joe Brady.

quote:absolutely correct. If catching a lot of balls during summer transforms a guy into elite receiver, then everyone in the country would do it.

These guys all had great hands and god-given ability. That’s 99% of it.
Oh, and being in Joe Brady’s offense and having a generational QB putting the ball on target.

Once joe left the jugs got locked up

The summer of 10 thousand catches.
I remember a select few retards saying this was dumb. Seemed to work out bc our receivers caught literally everything thrown at them

Is it possible that they were as good as they were because they caught a million jug passes?
Is it possible that practice makes you better than you would have been without it?

quote:of course practice helps, and I'd want all my WRs to catch jugs passes over the summer. But to think that simply catching jugs passes over one summer elevates a guy from a good WR to a great WR is absolute nonsense. 99% of it is the guy's natural ability. (A huge part of it is also the scheme he's in, and a QB that gets the ball to him-on target)

Catching a lot of balls did turn JJ and Chase into elite receivers. They were great before that but not elite. No ones saying they weren’t good before or that catching balls was the only thing that ever contributed to their performance. But catching 10k balls that summer did significantly decrease the number of drops we had. The point is if you catch 10k balls, you can start worrying about other receiver skills. You can see the drop off we had last year when our receiving options, who are mostly elite prospects, did not catch 10k balls during the summer.

If it’s overused then why did Joe Brady feel the need to use it, along with the gloves, special glasses and implementation of closed doors etc? It may have not have been some new invention in college football to improve hand eye coordination, but it was obviously a new approach for LSU. Based on the creation of the video, it wasn’t something LSU had done previously.

Well, I do distinctly remember Chase in an interview giving credit to all the balls they caught that summer because of the ball seeming to slow down in live action and was a lot easier to catch. There was a combination of things that made them great. The receiver’s God given abilities, jugs practice, great rapport with Joe Burrow and him throwing a very catchable ball and him also being accurate along with the system Joe Brady implemented.

quote:agreed. And of course a lot of factors contribute to a WR having a great year.

I'm just saying that, among the factors you listed, jugs practice was the least important.

I don't know why this isn't a permanent part of each summer now.

Summer of 2019 was “Summer of 1000 catches”
Summer of 2020 was “Summer of 1000 bitches”

It's been a part of the summer for YEARSSSS, it just wasn't advertised. It's done after practice in the spring and fall as well. Jarvis and OBJ have talked about it.
Most of the drop happens when the player turns his head and try to get up the field before securing the catch. The jug machine has very little impact on that, the other things Brady implemented had a huge impact on concentration.
