re: Jerry Nadler speaks what most Democrats think

quote:You're assuming a lot and therefore you're missing the clear intent of my words. You're inferring that I am anti-Christian. I am not. I am, in fact, a Christian. You're inferring that I deny the impact of Christian values on our nation's founding. I do not deny them at all, and have defended that very point many times on this board over the years. You're also inferring that I am somehow with Nader in his disdain for Christianity. And, that is a mistaken impression as well
We are not a theocracy. We're a constitutional republic.
True, but guided by Christian beliefs. You are being obtuse if you don’t think that is why our country reached it’s heights.
What I AM agreeing with Nadler on, and this is a very important point, is that it it not the job of congress to determine the will of God. It is the job of congress to pass laws that are in keeping with the US constitution.
I shudder to think of the interpretations of God's will that our morally bankrupt congressmen would come up with if given half a chance

Can you imagine the outcome if congress, these godless heathens, started voting on what they determined to be the will of God?
I think "will of God" was erroneously injected into the conversation even though it was never really specified by anyone other than Nadler himself. While Steube's phraseology could be viewed in terms of "will of God," I believe his overarching sentiment had more to do with "God's design," as he specifically stated. There is a distinction there. "Will of God" is more proactive and specific than is the more generalized and vague concept of "God's design".
Also, regarding your statements about our government not being a theology: while that's technically correct, the Declaration of Independence lays out the general concept of the Founding Fathers' intended foundation of our entire governance.....it all starts with a few rights "endowed by our Creator," specifically the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Starts with those gifts from the Creator. And to achieve those God-given rights, the government is to proceed in xyz manner.
Mind you, I'm pretty much taking out of my rear end, but I'm pretty confident in it anyway. Looks good on paper at least.

quote:Well the Declaration of Independence asserts that our rights are given to us by God. I agree with that. And in saying that, the founders were telling the Brits that the right to independence was a God-given right. A pretty bold statement for those days.

11 years later when they wrote the document that would govern our nation, the US Constitution, they made no reference to God. This was also a bold approach, and a stroke of genius IMO. We can all read the constitution for ourselves and infer its meaning. Otoh, I do not trust a political party to discern God's will and pass laws accordingly The people in congress are, on the whole, among the very worst people in our nation. The Constitution binds and limits them. Let them operate according to "God's will" and in 20 years we won't recognize our country. I barely recognize it now.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, generally speaking. "God's will" shouldn't be something that's debated openly in Congress, as if he who would "win" the debate over what is or what isn't God's will should have a more legitimate legislative position than the other. BUT, on an individual private basis, I'm sure a great many of them over time have likely considered their personal beliefs as to what is God's will to be a top factor in their decisions on various votes. I'm probably even Capt Obvious on that one.

I agree. As a Christian, I definitely don't want Congress divining God's will.
But I think this entire debate (in this thread and as an extension of the one between Never Seen My Own Nads-ler and Steube) is off track and poorly framed. Too tired to deal with it tonight.

I hope the devil drops that fat little soul in a wood chipper everyday for eternity when his time comes.

One thing I hope to get to see is this fat little prick cough up the gavel of his committee chairmanship when they lose the House.
The first time he opens his mouth whoever gets it from him should tell him to sit the eff down and shut the eff up.. he doesn't run things anymore.
